Chapter 13: The Wedding They Tried To Stop
The walk back to the wedding venue felt unreal.
The same road.
The same trees.
The same flowers lining the entrance.
But I was not the same woman who had left that morning.
When I first woke up, I thought my biggest challenge was walking down the aisle.
I was worried about my dress.
My makeup.
The guests.
Now I was carrying decades of secrets in my hands.
And somehow, I was still walking toward the same man.
Terrell held my hand as we entered the garden.
The guests immediately noticed something had changed.
Whispers moved through the crowd.
People looked at the stained section of my gown.
They looked at my father.
They looked at Terrell.
Nobody knew the truth.
Not yet.
The wedding coordinator rushed toward us.
“Jasmine, are you okay?””
I smiled.
For the first time all day, it was a real smile.
“Yes.””
She looked uncertain.
“Are you sure?””
I looked at Terrell.
“Yes.””
The ceremony began.
The music played.
The guests stood.
And as I walked down the aisle, I saw Delphine.
She was sitting in the front row.
Perfect posture.
Perfect makeup.
Perfect expression.
Like nothing had happened.
But I saw something else.
Fear.
For the first time, Delphine Vance looked afraid.
Because she knew I had chosen to keep walking.
I reached the altar.
Terrell looked at me.
His eyes were filled with emotion.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
I shook my head.
“Not today.””
The officiant began speaking.
But before we reached the vows, the doors behind the guests opened.
Everyone turned.
A man stepped inside.
Older.
Confident.
Cold.
Adrian Vance.
Terrell’s uncle.
The person who had filed the claim.
The person Delphine had been working with.
He walked forward with an attorney beside him.
The crowd became silent.
The officiant stopped.
“Can I help you?””
Adrian looked directly at me.
“This wedding cannot continue.””
Gasps moved through the guests.
Terrell stepped forward.
“Uncle Adrian.””
Adrian smiled.
“Terrell.””
His eyes moved to me.
“Jasmine Okafor.””
I stood still.
“Why are you here?””
He held up a document.
“Because this marriage is based on a condition that is no longer valid.””
Delphine stood slowly.
A small smile appeared.
There it was.
The plan.
She wanted everyone to see me panic.
She wanted me to walk away.
But I didn’t.
I looked at Adrian.
“Explain.””
He seemed surprised by my calmness.
“The property agreement requires the marriage to be entered freely.””
“Yes.””
“And I believe you were manipulated.””
The crowd became uncomfortable.
I looked around.
Everyone was waiting for my reaction.
Years ago, I would have cried.
I would have defended myself.
I would have asked someone else what to do.
Not today.
“By who?””
Adrian glanced at Terrell.
“By this family.””
I almost laughed.
The irony was unbelievable.
The same family that spent years hiding things from me was now being accused of controlling me.
But I knew the difference.
There was one person standing beside me.
Not in front of me.
Beside me.
I looked at Terrell.
“Did you ever tell me about the property before today?””
“No.””
“Did you ever ask me to marry you because of it?””
“Never.””
I looked back at Adrian.
“And I didn’t know about any of this when I said yes.””
Harold Bennett stepped forward from the crowd.
“I can confirm that.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“You?””
Harold nodded.
“Your grandfather’s attorney.””
The garden became silent.
Harold held up a folder.
“There is something everyone should hear.””
Delphine’s face changed.
“Harold, don’t.””
He ignored her.
“Your grandfather predicted this exact situation.””
Adrian frowned.
“What?””
“He knew people would challenge Jasmine’s choice.””
Harold opened the folder.
“He left a recorded statement.””
Everyone froze.
“A statement?””
Harold nodded.
He pressed a button on a small device.
An old man’s voice filled the garden.
“If you are hearing this, someone has tried to convince Jasmine that her choice does not belong to her.””
I felt tears forming.
Terrell’s grandfather.
His voice.
His final message.
The recording continued.
“Jasmine Okafor’s decision was never about a house. It was never about money.””
A pause.
“It was about whether the people around her respected her enough to let her choose.””
I looked at Delphine.
Her face had lost all confidence.
The recording ended with one final sentence.
“Anyone who tries to take that choice away from her proves they never understood the purpose of my agreement.””
Silence.
Then Harold looked at Adrian.
“The challenge has no foundation.””
Adrian stepped back.
For the first time, Delphine looked completely defeated.
But then she spoke.
Quietly.
“You think this changes everything?””
Everyone turned.
She looked directly at me.
“You still don’t know the whole truth.””
My heart tightened.
Because I knew that tone.
May you like
She had one more secret.
And this time, she was not smiling.
