Chapter 10: The Person Behind The Signature

I stared at the signature at the bottom of the document.

For a moment, my brain refused to understand what my eyes were seeing.

The name was written clearly.

*Terrell Vance.*

I looked up slowly.

“No.””

The word came out before I could stop it.

Terrell’s face changed.

“Jasmine…”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“You signed it?””

He immediately shook his head.

“I need you to listen to me.””

“Then explain why your name is there.””

The room became painfully quiet.

My father looked between us.

Harold took the document and examined it carefully.

“This signature is dated today.””

Terrell moved closer.

“I did not sign that.””

I wanted to believe him.

I really did.

But after everything that happened, trust felt fragile.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had an explanation.

Everyone had kept something from me.

“Then who did?””

Terrell looked at the paper.

His face became serious.

“Mama.””

Harold shook his head.

“She would need access to your signature.””

Terrell went silent.

That silence scared me.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“Months ago, she asked me to sign some estate paperwork.””

My heart sank.

“And you did?””

“I thought it was routine.””

I closed my eyes.

Another secret.

Another thing I did not know.

Terrell’s voice softened.

“I swear to you, Jasmine, I never signed anything giving her permission to challenge this.””

Harold studied the document.

“She may have copied the signature from another agreement.””

My father looked angry.

“Delphine has been planning this for years.””

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

He looked away.

That answer hurt more than anything.

“Dad.””

He sighed.

“Yes.””

The room felt like it was closing in.

“How many people knew?””

Nobody answered.

That was the answer.

I picked up my wedding bouquet from the table.

The flowers looked beautiful.

Perfect.

Almost like they belonged to someone else’s life.

“I need air.””

Terrell followed me outside.

The hallway was quiet.

For the first time all day, nobody was watching us.

“Jasmine.””

I stopped.

“Did you ever plan to tell me?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

He looked down.

“I don’t know.””

I nodded.

“That’s the problem.””

He swallowed.

“I was scared.””

“I know.””

My voice softened.

“I know everyone was scared.””

I turned toward him.

“But fear does not give people permission to decide my future.””

He nodded.

“You’re right.””

The honesty surprised me.

No excuses.

No defending himself.

Just acceptance.

“I love you,” he said.

I looked at him.

“I know.””

“But?””

I looked back toward the office.

“But I need to know that when we stand together, I’m standing beside someone who trusts me enough to tell me the truth.””

Terrell stepped closer.

“You are.””

“Then prove it.””

He nodded.

“How?””

“Tell me everything.””

He took a deep breath.

“My mother has been pressuring me for months.””

“About what?””

“The marriage.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“She believed if I married you, the property would transfer.””

“And she wanted to stop it.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t she just ask you?””

His expression became bitter.

“Because she knew I would choose you.””

I looked away.

That sentence should have comforted me.

Instead, it made me realize how far Delphine had gone.

A staff member from the attorney’s office approached.

“Mr. Bennett needs you both inside.””

When we returned, Harold had another file open.

“There is something you need to see.””

He pushed a photograph across the desk.

It showed Delphine.

Standing with someone.

Someone I recognized.

My breath stopped.

“Who is that?””

Harold looked at me.

“That is the person who helped her prepare the challenge.””

I stared at the image.

May you like

Because standing beside my mother-in-law was the one person I thought would never betray me.

My closest friend.
