Chapter 12: The Heir Nobody Expected
The words echoed through the room.
“Another heir.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone understood what that meant.
If there was another person with a legal claim, everything could change.
Harold took the new document.
“Who filed this?””
The assistant hesitated.
“A lawyer representing someone named Adrian Vance.””
Terrell’s face changed instantly.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“Who is Adrian?””
He did not answer immediately.
That scared me.
“Terrell.””
He closed his eyes.
“Adrian is my uncle.””
My father looked confused.
“I thought Delphine was your father’s only child.””
“She was.””
Terrell looked at the document.
“Adrian was my grandfather’s son from another relationship.””
I stared.
“Another secret?””
Terrell nodded.
“Apparently.””
Harold read through the filing.
“He is claiming your grandfather promised him the property.””
Terrell shook his head.
“That makes no sense.””
“Why?””
“Because my grandfather cut contact with him years ago.””
I looked at Harold.
“Can he win?””
Harold did not answer immediately.
That was enough to worry me.
“Maybe.””
The room became silent.
I looked at the wedding dress.
At the stain.
At the papers.
At the endless secrets.
A few hours ago, I thought my biggest problem was walking down the aisle with a ruined gown.
Now I was standing in the middle of a family battle that started before I was born.
Terrell noticed my expression.
“Jasmine.””
I looked at him.
“I’m sorry.””
“For what?””
“For bringing you into this.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at me.
“I was already in this.””
I picked up the agreement.
“This is my mother’s story.””
I looked at my father.
“My family’s story.””
Then I looked at Terrell.
“And now it’s ours.””
Harold nodded.
“That is exactly the mindset you need.””
“Why?””
“Because Delphine’s strategy depends on one thing.””
“What?””
“You feeling overwhelmed.””
I thought about the wine.
The comments.
The secrets.
Everything she had done.
“She wanted me to walk away.””
“Yes.””
“But why?””
Harold looked at the clock.
“Because if you walk away before the ceremony, she can argue the condition was never completed.””
I froze.
“She planned all of this.””
“Yes.””
The wine.
The humiliation.
The delays.
All of it.
Not to ruin my wedding.
To stop it.
Terrell stepped beside me.
“We still have time.””
I looked at him.
“Time for what?””
“To get married.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
The idea felt impossible.
A wedding.
After everything.
But then I remembered something.
The reason I chose Terrell.
Not his family.
Not his last name.
Not the house.
Him.
I nodded.
“We’re going back.””
My father looked surprised.
“Jasmine?””
I looked at him.
“I’m not running.””
Rachel wiped her tears.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
“I know.””
It was not forgiveness.
Not yet.
But it was the first step.
As we prepared to leave, Harold handed me one final envelope.
“This arrived this morning.””
I frowned.
“From who?””
He looked serious.
“Your mother.””
My heart stopped.
“That’s impossible.””
“She left instructions for one final letter to be delivered only after the wedding ceremony began.””
I stared at the envelope.
“Why after?””
Harold looked at me.
“Because your mother knew something nobody else knew.””
“What?””
He lowered his voice.
“She knew Delphine would try to stop the wedding.””
I held the envelope tightly.
“And?””
Harold looked toward the door.
“She also knew someone else would try to stop it.””
I looked down at the envelope.
