Chapter 9: The Father I Never Knew
The recording stopped.
Nobody spoke.
I waited for someone to explain.
No one did.
Adults always thought children couldn’t understand complicated things.
But children understand fear.
And everyone in that room was terrified.
“My father isn’t my father?””
My own voice sounded strange.
My mother immediately knelt beside me.
“Lily—”
“Who is he?””
She opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
That hurt more than the answer.
Because I knew she had been keeping something from me.
Evelyn looked at her.
“Sarah.””
My mother looked away.
“I was going to tell her.””
“When?””
“I don’t know.””
The honesty was painful.
Evelyn sighed.
“Claire changed the records because of him.””
My mother nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked between them.
“Who is my real father?””
Neither answered.
Then the hidden room door suddenly shook.
Richard.
He had found us.
My mother grabbed the documents.
“Not now.””
Evelyn looked around.
“There has to be another way out.””
Richard’s voice came from the other side.
“I know you’re in there.””
My heart raced.
He sounded calm.
That was worse.
“Evelyn, you don’t want to do this.””
My mother held me close.
“Don’t listen.””
Richard continued.
“You have no idea what Claire was protecting you from.””
Evelyn shouted back:
“You mean what you were protecting yourself from.””
Silence.
Then Richard laughed.
“You still blame me.””
“You ruined her life.””
“No.””
His voice became colder.
“She ruined mine.””
The room went quiet.
I looked at Evelyn.
She understood something.
“What did you do, Richard?””
No answer.
Then:
“She chose Sarah.””
My mother froze.
“What?””
Richard continued.
“She chose a life away from me.””
My mother’s face changed.
Like a memory had returned.
“You knew.””
Richard laughed.
“You really didn’t tell her?””
I looked at my mother.
“Tell me what?””
She closed her eyes.
“Lily…”
The door shook again.
“We don’t have time.””
Evelyn searched through the box.
Then she found another letter.
“Wait.””
She opened it.
The handwriting was Claire’s.
She read aloud.
“Evelyn, if Richard finds this room, he will try to convince you that Lily was created from a mistake.””
My mother looked up.
Evelyn continued.
“She wasn’t.””
My breathing slowed.
“Lily was the reason I survived.””
The words hit everyone.
Claire continued:
“She was the reason I kept fighting.””
Evelyn’s eyes filled.
“She knew…”
My mother whispered:
“She knew.””
Another sentence.
Evelyn kept reading.
“Richard will tell you he loved me.””
Her voice shook.
“But love does not threaten. Love does not control. Love does not make someone disappear.””
The room went silent.
Richard slammed against the door.
“Open it.””
Evelyn looked at the final line.
Then stopped.
“What?””
My mother stepped closer.
“What does it say?””
Evelyn looked at me.
“It says…”
She swallowed.
“‘The person who saved Lily was the only person Richard could never find.’”
Everyone stared.
“Who?”” my mother asked.
Evelyn turned the paper around.
At the bottom was a name.
A name none of us expected.
My mother whispered it.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“Who is it?””
Before she could answer, the hidden door burst open.
Richard stood there.
But he wasn’t looking at Evelyn.
He wasn’t looking at my mother.
He was looking at me.
And he said:
“Hello, Lily.””
My blood turned cold.
Because he wasn’t surprised to see me.
May you like
He looked relieved.
Like he had been searching for me all along.
