Chapter 10: The Man Who Knew My Name
Richard Vale stood in the doorway like he had been invited.
That was the part that scared me most.
Not his anger.
Not his threats.
The calmness.
He looked at me the way someone looks at something they lost and finally found.
My mother moved in front of me immediately.
“Stay away from her.””
Richard sighed.
“Sarah, after all these years, you still think you can protect her from the truth.””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“You followed us.””
“No.””
He glanced around the hidden room.
“I remembered.””
Her face hardened.
“This room was supposed to be forgotten.””
“Nothing is ever forgotten.””
His eyes moved to the papers in Evelyn’s hand.
Then to the necklace.
Then back to me.
“I spent nine years wondering where Claire hid you.””
My stomach twisted.
Nine years.
My entire life.
“You knew about me?””
Richard smiled faintly.
“Of course I did.””
My mother’s voice shook.
“You never went after Lily.””
“I tried.””
The words made her freeze.
“What?””
Richard stepped closer.
“I searched everywhere.””
“You wanted to hurt her.””
“No.””
For the first time, his expression changed.
“I wanted to understand why Claire chose you.””
Nobody spoke.
I didn’t know what he meant.
Why would someone choose me?
I was just a girl.
A girl who wore secondhand clothes.
A girl who had gone hungry.
A girl who had spent years wondering why her mother looked sad whenever she asked about her past.
Richard looked at me.
“You know what your mother never told you?””
“Richard.””
My mother’s warning was sharp.
But he continued.
“She never told you that Claire wasn’t your only protector.””
I looked at Sarah.
“Mom?””
She closed her eyes.
Richard smiled.
“There it is.””
He looked at Evelyn.
“She never told her.””
Evelyn’s voice was cold.
“Enough.””
“No.””
Richard stepped into the room.
“Lily deserves the truth.””
My mother grabbed my hand.
“Don’t listen to him.””
Richard tilted his head.
“You believe Sarah saved you.””
I stared at him.
“She did.””
“Yes.””
He nodded.
“She did.””
The agreement surprised everyone.
Then he continued.
“But she wasn’t the one who hid you.””
The room became silent.
Evelyn looked at the letter.
“The name.””
Richard saw it.
And his face changed.
Only for a second.
But it was enough.
“You found it.””
My mother whispered:
“Who is Daniel?””
I didn’t know that name.
But everyone else reacted.
Richard looked at her.
“So Claire finally told you.””
Evelyn looked confused.
“Who is Daniel?””
Richard laughed quietly.
“The man your daughter trusted.””
My mother’s fingers tightened around mine.
“Why would Claire trust him?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at me.
“Because Daniel was your real father.””
The room stopped.
I heard my own heartbeat.
No one moved.
My mother looked like someone had struck her.
“That’s impossible.””
Richard looked at her.
“Is it?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“You knew Claire loved him.””
“Stop.””
“You knew she was going to leave with him.””
My mother’s eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t know.””
Richard smiled sadly.
“That was the problem.””
Evelyn looked at Sarah.
“You knew there was another man?””
Sarah looked ashamed.
“I knew Claire was in love.””
“With Daniel?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Sarah looked at her.
“Because Claire begged me.””
Richard laughed.
“And because Sarah knew if Evelyn found out, Claire would never get away.””
Evelyn stepped back.
The pain on her face was worse than anger.
“She trusted you.””
“I protected her.””
“You hid my daughter from me.””
“I hid her from him.””
Sarah pointed at Richard.
Everyone went quiet.
Richard’s expression hardened.
“You still believe that.””
“Because it’s true.””
He looked at me.
“Lily, your mother wants you to believe I’m the monster.””
My hand trembled.
“Are you?””
The question surprised him.
For a moment, he looked almost human.
Then he smiled.
“Everyone is a monster in someone’s story.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He stared at me.
Then he said:
“Your mother wasn’t running from me.””
My heart pounded.
“Then who?””
Richard looked toward the papers.
“Your real enemy was never me.””
Evelyn frowned.
“What are you saying?””
Richard’s eyes moved to the letter.
“Claire discovered the truth too late.””
The hidden room suddenly felt smaller.
“What truth?””
Richard stepped closer.
“The reason your father disappeared.””
My mother went completely still.
“What?””
Richard whispered:
“Because someone made sure he could never come back.””
A loud noise came from above us.
Footsteps.
More than one person.
Richard looked toward the ceiling.
His expression changed.
For the first time that night…
he looked afraid.
“They found us.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Who?””
Richard didn’t answer.
He looked at me.
And whispered:
“Lily, you need to understand something.””
“What?””
“The people coming through that door aren’t here for the documents.””
The footsteps stopped.
May you like
Richard’s eyes locked onto mine.
“They’re here for you.””
