Chapter 12: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Gone
I ran.
I didn’t think.
I didn’t ask questions.
I just ran.
My mother’s hand was around mine.
Evelyn was behind us.
The hidden hallway twisted beneath the hotel like a forgotten underground world.
Behind us, voices shouted.
Footsteps followed.
But one voice cut through everything.
Claire.
“Left!””
We turned.
A door appeared at the end of the tunnel.
My mother opened it.
And there she was.
Claire Whitmore.
Alive.
Standing in front of us.
For a second, nobody moved.
My mother stared.
Evelyn stopped breathing.
I just looked.
Because the woman in front of me was impossible.
She looked older than the photograph.
Tired.
Scarred.
But her eyes were exactly the same as mine.
The same color.
The same sadness.
“Lily.””
She said my name like she had practiced it a thousand times.
I didn’t move.
Then my mother ran to her.
The two women collided.
They cried.
They held each other like they were trying to make up for twenty years in one moment.
“I thought you were dead,” Evelyn whispered.
Claire looked at her.
“I know.””
“Why?””
Claire looked down.
“Because it was the only way to keep Lily alive.””
I stared.
“You’re Claire?””
She turned toward me.
“Yes.””
“My mother’s friend?””
A sad smile appeared.
“No.””
She knelt.
“I’m your grandmother.””
The words felt impossible.
Too big.
Too much.
I looked at Evelyn.
Then Claire.
“You’re both my grandmothers?””
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
I didn’t know what I was supposed to feel.
Happy?
Angry?
Confused?
All of it happened at once.
Claire reached toward me.
“Can I?””
I looked at my mother.
She nodded.
Slowly, I stepped closer.
Claire touched my face.
Her hands shook.
“I used to imagine this moment.””
“Why didn’t you come back?””
The question escaped before I could stop it.
Claire closed her eyes.
“Because every time I tried, someone got closer to finding you.””
“Who?””
She looked behind us.
“Victor.””
The fear returned.
My mother looked at her.
“You knew he was alive?””
“Yes.””
“And Richard?””
Claire nodded.
“He was never the one in charge.””
Everyone went silent.
Evelyn whispered:
“Then who was?””
Claire looked at her.
“The person you trusted most.””
Evelyn’s face changed.
“No.””
Claire nodded.
“I’m sorry.””
The answer hurt her.
“Who?””
Claire looked at me.
“Your grandfather.””
I didn’t know his name.
But everyone else did.
Victor.
The man who had been hiding behind everything.
The man who had turned everyone against each other.
The man who had been searching for me.
Claire took the necklace from my neck.
“Lily, I need you to understand.””
She opened the pendant.
“There is something you have to see.””
Inside the hidden compartment was the small metal card.
But Claire pressed another hidden piece.
The blue gemstone separated.
Inside was a tiny memory chip.
My mother gasped.
“The evidence.””
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
Evelyn looked terrified.
“Twenty years.””
“Everything.””
Claire looked at the chip.
“Everything Victor did.””
A noise came from the tunnel.
Footsteps.
Closer.
Claire’s face changed.
“He found us.””
My mother grabbed her arm.
“We need to leave.””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
“What?””
“I need to finish this.””
She looked at me.
“I spent nine years protecting you from the truth.””
Her eyes filled.
“But now you’re old enough to know it.””
The footsteps grew louder.
Claire handed the necklace back to me.
“Lily, the reason Victor has always been afraid of you…”
The door behind us started opening.
“…is because you are the only person who can expose him.””
The door burst open.
Victor stood there.
But this time…
he wasn’t looking for the necklace.
He was looking at Claire.
And he said:
“I knew you would come back for her.””
Claire stepped in front of me.
May you like
Victor smiled.
“Now I finally have all three of you.””
