Chapter 11: The Secret Claire Died Protecting
The hidden room shook.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
My mother pulled me backward.
Evelyn grabbed the documents.
Richard stood frozen near the doorway.
For the first time, I saw fear on his face.
Real fear.
Not an act.
Not a trick.
“What did you do?”” Evelyn asked him.
Richard didn’t look at her.
“I didn’t call them.””
“Then who did?””
Nobody answered.
A voice came from the hallway.
“Richard.””
The sound was calm.
Too calm.
Richard’s face changed.
“No.””
My mother looked at him.
“You know that voice.””
He didn’t reply.
The door opened.
A man walked in.
Older.
Gray hair.
Expensive suit.
But unlike Richard, he didn’t look angry.
He looked disappointed.
“I expected better from you.””
Richard whispered:
“Victor.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But the way Richard said it did.
Like he was looking at the person who controlled him.
Victor looked around the room.
His eyes stopped on Evelyn.
“After twenty years, you finally found the truth.””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
Victor smiled.
“Someone your daughter knew very well.””
My mother whispered:
“Claire.””
Victor looked at her.
“Yes.””
“Where is she?””
His expression changed slightly.
“She made a difficult choice.””
My mother’s face went pale.
“No.””
Victor looked at me.
“And now she has made another one.””
I stepped closer to my mother.
“What does he mean?””
Nobody answered.
Victor walked toward the box.
He picked up the letter.
“You were always sentimental, Claire.””
My mother’s voice became angry.
“Don’t touch her things.””
Victor smiled.
“She was brilliant.””
He looked at Evelyn.
“She understood what you never did.””
Evelyn stared at him.
“What?””
“Power doesn’t protect people.””
He looked at Richard.
“Control does.””
Richard looked disgusted.
“You’re sick.””
Victor turned.
“You were always weak, Richard.””
That sentence hit him harder than an insult.
“You used Claire.””
“No.””
Victor smiled.
“She used me.””
The room went quiet.
My mother looked confused.
Victor continued.
“Claire discovered the truth about my organization.””
“What organization?”” Evelyn asked.
Victor ignored her.
“She found the records. The payments. The names.””
He looked at me.
“And then she discovered the one thing that could destroy everything.””
The necklace.
My hand went to my throat.
Victor noticed.
“Yes.””
His eyes narrowed.
“That.””
My mother stepped in front of me.
“You’ll never have it.””
Victor smiled.
“You still don’t understand.””
He looked at Evelyn.
“The necklace was never valuable because of the key.””
Evelyn froze.
“Then why?””
“Because Claire hid the final evidence somewhere only Lily could reveal.””
My stomach dropped.
“Me?””
Victor nodded.
“You.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know anything.””
“No.””
He smiled.
“But your memory does.””
My mother stared at him.
“What are you talking about?””
Victor reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small photograph.
A baby.
Me.
A hospital room.
My mother holding me.
And another person beside the bed.
Daniel.
My father.
I stared.
“I’ve never seen this.””
Victor handed it to me.
“Because Claire made sure you wouldn’t.””
My mother grabbed the photo.
Her hands shook.
“Where did you get this?””
“From Claire.””
“No.””
Victor looked at her.
“Yes.””
My mother stepped back.
“When?””
Victor didn’t answer.
That silence said everything.
“You saw her.””
He smiled.
“Recently.””
Evelyn’s eyes widened.
“She’s alive.””
Victor looked away.
“For now.””
The words destroyed the room.
My mother’s voice cracked.
“What did you do?””
Victor looked at the documents.
“Claire made a mistake.””
“What?””
“She thought hiding Lily would end the fight.””
He looked at me.
“But Lily was the fight.””
I felt sick.
“I don’t understand.””
Victor crouched slightly so he was closer to my height.
“You were born with proof.””
“Proof of what?””
He smiled.
“Of who Daniel really was.””
My mother grabbed my shoulder.
“Don’t answer him.””
Victor stood.
“Ask yourself why Claire changed your birth records.””
I looked at my mother.
She looked away.
And that hurt more than anything.
Because I knew.
There was still another secret.
Victor turned toward the exit.
“Take the girl.””
Two men stepped forward.
My mother screamed:
“No!””
Everything happened at once.
Richard moved.
Evelyn grabbed the nearest object.
The lights went out.
And in the darkness, someone whispered my name.
Not Richard.
Not Victor.
A woman.
“Lily.””
My heart stopped.
Because I knew that voice.
I had heard it only once.
On the phone.
“Mom?””
May you like
The voice came again.
“Run.””
