Chapter 7: The Call From the Dead
The phone kept ringing.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
My mother stared at the screen as if it belonged to someone from another lifetime.
Claire.
The name was glowing beneath the cracked glass.
I didn’t understand why that name scared everyone.
I only knew one thing.
The woman calling was my mother’s friend.
And Evelyn Whitmore’s daughter.
“Answer it,” Evelyn whispered.
Sarah looked at her.
“I can’t.””
“You have to.””
My mother shook her head.
“What if it isn’t her?””
Evelyn’s voice broke.
“Then let me hear her voice one more time.””
The phone continued ringing.
Finally, my mother pressed the button.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was nothing.
Only static.
Then a quiet voice.
“Sarah?””
My mother covered her mouth.
She couldn’t speak.
The sound that came out wasn’t a word.
It was a sob.
Evelyn stepped closer.
“Claire?””
The line went silent.
Then the voice returned.
“Mom?””
Evelyn collapsed into the nearest chair.
I had never seen someone powerful look so fragile.
“Claire… where are you?””
There was a pause.
“I don’t have much time.””
My mother tightened her grip on the phone.
“Where have you been?””
“Running.””
“From who?””
Another silence.
Then Claire answered.
“From the same person who tried to erase me.””
Evelyn looked at the necklace.
“Richard?””
The voice on the phone became tense.
“He’s still there?””
“He was here tonight,” Sarah said.
The silence on the other end was terrifying.
“Then you found Lily.””
My mother looked at me.
“Yes.””
A shaky breath came through the phone.
“She’s okay?””
I leaned closer.
“She’s right here.””
My mother handed me the phone.
I wasn’t sure why.
Maybe because she knew I needed answers too.
“Hello?””
The voice changed immediately.
Softer.
Kinder.
“Lily?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Claire.””
“I know.””
A small laugh came through the speaker.
“You sound just like Sarah.””
I looked at my mother.
“She said that about me too.””
Claire went quiet.
Then she whispered:
“I missed so much.””
I didn’t know what to say.
Adults always talked about missing things.
Birthdays.
Holidays.
Years.
But I didn’t understand how someone could miss nine years.
Then Claire asked:
“Do you still have the necklace?””
I touched it.
“Yes.””
“Good.””
“Why is it important?””
Claire didn’t answer immediately.
Because the answer was probably bigger than I was ready for.
“Lily, that necklace was supposed to keep you safe.””
My mother looked at me.
“Safe from what?””
Claire’s voice became low.
“From my father.””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Even after all these years, hearing it still hurt.
“Claire,” Evelyn whispered.
“I’m sorry, Mom.””
The words broke something inside the room.
Twenty years of pain in two words.
Evelyn stepped closer to the phone.
“I thought you hated me.””
“I never hated you.””
“Then why did you leave?””
The question came out desperate.
Claire was silent.
Then:
“Because I thought if I stayed, Lily would die.””
Everyone froze.
My mother grabbed my shoulder.
“What are you talking about?””
Claire continued.
“Richard knew about the documents. He knew I had proof against him.””
“What proof?”” Evelyn asked.
“The accounts. The names. The people he paid.””
Evelyn looked at the floor.
“And Lily?””
“He found out I had a daughter.””
My heart started beating faster.
“Why?””
“Because Lily was the only person who could prove I wasn’t lying.””
I frowned.
“I don’t understand.””
Claire’s voice softened.
“You were born with something connected to the truth.””
The necklace.
I looked down.
My mother whispered:
“The key.””
“Yes,” Claire said.
“The key wasn’t the necklace.””
Evelyn stood.
“What?””
“The necklace was only the container.””
Nobody spoke.
Claire continued.
“The real secret is hidden somewhere else.””
My mother looked confused.
“Where?””
Claire hesitated.
Then said:
“Inside Lily’s birth records.””
My mother went pale.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“What did you do?””
“I changed them.””
Evelyn looked shocked.
“You changed your own daughter’s records?””
“I had to.””
“Why?””
Claire’s voice cracked.
“Because Richard had people everywhere.””
The phone suddenly crackled.
The signal was weakening.
“Claire?””
“I don’t have much time.””
“Where are you?””
Another pause.
Then:
“I’m close.””
My mother stepped forward.
“Tell us where.””
“I can’t.””
“Claire—”
“Listen to me.””
Her voice became urgent.
“If Richard knows I called, he will come for Lily.””
The lights above us flickered.
Everyone looked up.
My mother whispered:
“What was that?””
Claire went silent.
Then her voice changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“He found me.””
“What?””
“Sarah, take Lily and leave.””
The line crackled.
“Now.””
Then we heard something in the background.
A door opening.
A man’s voice.
“Who are you talking to?””
Claire gasped.
May you like
The phone dropped.
And before the call ended, we heard her scream.
