Chapter 10: The Heir Who Was Never Meant To Exist

The words on my mother’s letter followed me everywhere.

Find the person who was raised in your place.

I read that sentence dozens of times.

Every time, I hoped it would somehow mean something different.

It didn’t.

Someone else had lived my life.

Someone else had carried the name Hale.

Someone else had been prepared to inherit everything my father built.

And I was the secret.

The hidden child.

The mistake that Richard Hale spent decades trying to control.

Back at the mansion, nobody spoke during breakfast.

The same room where my family once celebrated victories now felt like a courtroom.

Victoria sat across from me.

For the first time, I noticed something.

She wasn’t looking at the wealth around her.

She wasn’t looking at the company portraits.

She was looking at me.

Like she was afraid I would disappear.

“Tell me the truth,” I said.

Her eyes lifted.

“I will.””

“Who was raised in my place?””

She took a deep breath.

“His name was Ethan.””

The name felt unfamiliar.

“Who is Ethan?””

Victoria looked at Thomas.

He slowly answered.

“Richard’s original heir.””

I frowned.

“Original?””

Thomas nodded.

“Before Richard married your mother, before the company became what it was, there was another child.””

My hands tightened.

“Another son?””

“No.””

Thomas hesitated.

“A son who was supposed to inherit everything.””

I looked at Victoria.

“And where is he now?””

Nobody answered immediately.

That frightened me more than anything.

Finally, Victoria spoke.

“Your father erased him.””

The room went cold.

“How?””

She looked down.

“Not physically.””

A pause.

“He changed everything around him.””

Thomas placed a file on the table.

“Ethan was born to Elizabeth Carter.””

My heart stopped.

“My aunt?””

“Yes.””

I stared at the file.

“My father took Elizabeth’s child?””

Victoria shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“He took your identity.””

The sentence hit harder.

Thomas opened the file.

Inside were documents.

Hospital records.

Private agreements.

DNA reports.

My eyes moved across the pages.

Then I saw the names.

Alexander Hale.

Ethan Carter.

My hands started shaking.

The detective looked at me.

“Mr. Hale, there is something else.””

“What?””

“We found the original hospital records.””

He placed another document down.

“The child registered as Richard Hale’s son was Ethan.””

Silence.

I stared at the paper.

“So my entire life…”

Victoria whispered:

“Was built on someone else’s place.””

I stood up.

I couldn’t breathe.

All the birthdays.

The private schools.

The business lessons.

The expectations.

Everything.

A life that belonged to someone else.

Then Maria entered the room.

She looked terrified.

“Mr. Alexander.””

I turned.

“What happened?””

She held an old photograph.

“I found this hidden behind your mother’s portrait.””

I took it.

The picture showed two children.

A little boy.

And a little girl.

The little girl was Victoria.

The boy was me.

But behind the photo was writing.

My mother’s handwriting.

*“The children Richard tried to separate will find each other again.””*

I looked at Victoria.

“What does this mean?””

She looked at the photograph.

Then whispered:

“Alexander…”

Her voice broke.

“Ethan isn’t missing.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

Victoria looked terrified.

“He has been here.””

My stomach dropped.

“Where?””

She looked toward the mansion entrance.

Before she could answer, the front doors opened.

A man walked inside.

Late thirties.

Dark hair.

Calm expression.

But the moment he looked at me, I knew.

He wasn’t a stranger.

Not completely.

He looked at the photograph in my hand.

Then at Victoria.

Then at me.

“I guess we ran out of time.””

Nobody moved.

The man stepped closer.

“My name is Ethan Carter.””

My entire world stopped.

And then he said:

“I was the son your father erased.””
