Chapter 6: The Person Who Heard Everything

The footsteps stopped outside the door.

Nobody breathed.

The detective quietly reached for his radio.

I stared at the handle.

The person outside didn’t knock.

They didn’t call out.

They simply waited.

As if they knew exactly what was happening inside.

Then Victoria whispered:

“He found us.””

I turned toward her.

“Who?””

Her face had lost all color.

“Your father’s lawyer.””

The door opened.

A man in his late sixties stood there.

Thomas Reed.

My father’s personal attorney.

The man who handled every legal document in our family.

The man who stood beside me at my father’s funeral.

He looked at the room.

Then at the recorder.

Then at Victoria.

“I was hoping we would never reach this moment.””

My voice became cold.

“You knew.””

Thomas sighed.

“I knew your father made mistakes.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

Silence.

Then he answered.

“Yes.””

The word felt heavier than I expected.

I stepped closer.

“You knew about the recordings?””

“Yes.””

“The hidden room?””

“Yes.””

“My mother’s message?””

Thomas looked down.

“Yes.””

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because I couldn’t believe how many people had been living inside a secret while I lived inside a lie.

“How many people knew?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

Victoria stepped forward.

“Thomas, you promised me.””

He looked at her sadly.

“I promised your father.””

Her expression changed.

“What?””

Thomas walked into the room.

“Victoria, you were young. You believed keeping his secret was the same as protecting Alexander.””

“I was protecting him.””

“No.””

Thomas shook his head.

“You were protecting the memory of a man who did not deserve it.””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at him.

“Explain.””

Thomas opened his briefcase.

He removed an old file.

“This is the original agreement your father signed twenty-eight years ago.””

He placed it on the desk.

The detective picked it up.

“What agreement?””

Thomas looked at me.

“The agreement that changed your family forever.””

I opened the file.

The first page contained my father’s signature.

But underneath it was another name.

A name I recognized.

My mother.

My hands tightened.

“What did my father do?””

Thomas hesitated.

Then he said:

“He made a deal to protect his company.””

“And?””

“He sacrificed someone else’s life to do it.””

The room went silent.

Victoria stepped backward.

“No.””

Thomas looked at her.

“You knew part of it.””

“I didn’t know everything.””

“That’s what your father wanted.””

I looked between them.

“What happened the night I was born?””

Thomas didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he pulled out another document.

A birth record.

But something was wrong.

The date.

The hospital.

The signatures.

Everything looked different from the records I had seen my entire life.

I stared at the paper.

“This isn’t my birth certificate.””

Thomas nodded.

“No.””

“Then whose is it?””

Nobody answered.

Until Maria spoke.

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“Mr. Alexander…”

I turned.

She looked terrified.

“Your father didn’t hide the truth because he was afraid you would hate him.””

“Then why?””

Maria’s eyes filled with tears.

“He hid it because he was afraid you would find out…”

She stopped.

“What?””

She looked at the document.

“…that the person you were raised believing was your sister…”

Victoria’s face went pale.

May you like

Maria finished the sentence.

“…was never actually your sister.””
