Chapter 12: The Name Written On The Death Certificate
Nobody moved.
The detective’s words hung in the room.
A death certificate.
My name.
A child named Alexander Hale.
I looked at Ethan.
He looked just as confused as I was.
“That’s impossible,” I said.
The detective shook his head.
“I know how it sounds.””
“Then explain.””
He opened the folder.
“This document was created twenty-eight years ago.””
The room became silent.
Twenty-eight years.
The same year I was born.
I took the paper.
My hands felt numb.
The name was there.
Alexander Richard Hale.
Date of birth.
The same as mine.
But underneath it was something impossible.
Date of death.
The same day.
The same hospital.
I looked up.
“Someone declared me dead?””
Thomas looked horrified.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Nobody answered.
Until Ethan spoke.
“Because a dead child can’t inherit anything.””
The room froze.
I turned toward him.
“What?””
Ethan stepped closer.
“Think about it.””
His voice was calm.
“Richard needed me gone.””
He pointed at the document.
“And he needed you to become someone else.””
I looked at the death certificate again.
My entire life was built on a lie.
Not just my identity.
My existence.
Victoria sat down.
“I knew there was something wrong.””
I looked at her.
“You knew?””
She nodded slowly.
“When I was a child, I found documents in father’s office.””
“What documents?””
“About a baby.””
My breathing stopped.
She continued.
“I asked him about it.””
“What did he say?””
Victoria looked ashamed.
“He told me never to ask again.””
Ethan looked at her.
“And you listened.””
She closed her eyes.
“I was six years old.””
That answer hurt.
Because I remembered.
She had been a child too.
Everyone around Richard had been trapped.
I looked at the death certificate.
“Why did he keep me alive?””
Thomas answered.
“Because your mother fought him.””
I turned.
“She knew?””
“Yes.””
Thomas continued.
“Your mother discovered Richard planned to replace you with Ethan legally.””
My jaw tightened.
“So she stopped him.””
“She tried.””
The detective opened another file.
Inside was a newspaper clipping.
A headline.
*LOCAL WOMAN INJURED IN HIGHWAY ACCIDENT*
The date was the month after I was born.
The victim’s name was hidden.
But everyone in the room knew.
My mother.
I stared.
“She wasn’t sick.””
Nobody answered.
“She didn’t die from illness.””
Thomas lowered his eyes.
“No.””
My voice became colder.
“She was attacked.””
The silence confirmed it.
Victoria began crying.
“I found out years later.””
I looked at her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was scared.””
“Everyone was scared.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
A long silence followed.
Then Ethan spoke.
“There’s one more thing.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He reached into his coat and removed a small envelope.
“I found this in Elizabeth’s belongings.””
My name was written on it.
Not Alexander Hale.
Just Alexander.
My fingers trembled as I opened it.
Inside was one page.
My mother’s final message.
Alexander,
If you are reading this, then the people who loved you failed to protect you.
But remember this.
Your identity was stolen.
Your family was divided.
Your history was erased.
But your blood was never changed.
I looked at Ethan.
Then continued.
The person who raised you may not be your father.
The person who stood beside you may not share your blood.
But the person who saves you when everyone else turns away…
is the person you should trust.
My eyes moved to the final sentence.
And that was when I realized why Maria had risked everything for me.
Because my mother knew.
She knew the one person who would protect me when the truth finally came out.
Maria.
The maid everyone ignored.
The woman everyone considered invisible.
Then the detective received another call.
He answered.
His face changed.
“Mr. Hale…”
I stood.
“What now?””
He looked at the documents.
“We found the person who originally filed the false death record.””
“Who?””
He slowly lowered the phone.
“It wasn’t Richard Hale.””
My heart stopped.
“Then who was it?””
The detective looked toward Victoria.
May you like
And whispered:
“It was signed by your mother.””
