Chapter 13: The Truth My Mother Buried To Save Me
I stared at the detective.
“No.””
The word came out before I could think.
“No. That’s impossible.””
My mother was the one person in this entire story I believed was innocent.
The one person I thought had been trying to protect me.
The detective placed the document on the table.
“I understand how it looks.””
“It looks like you’re saying my mother killed my identity.””
Nobody spoke.
Victoria looked at the paper.
Then at me.
“She wouldn’t.””
Her voice was quiet.
But certain.
Thomas picked up the document.
“This signature needs to be verified.””
The detective nodded.
“We already checked.””
He placed another paper beside it.
“The signature matches.””
My chest tightened.
I stepped away from the table.
The mansion suddenly felt too large.
Too empty.
Too full of ghosts.
“My whole life…”
I whispered.
“My whole life, everyone lied to me.””
Ethan looked at me.
“Not everyone.””
I looked at him.
“What do you mean?””
He pointed toward Maria.
“She tried to tell you.””
Maria lowered her eyes.
“But I failed.””
“No,” Ethan said.
“You waited.””
Maria looked at him.
“You know?””
He nodded.
“Elizabeth told me about you.””
I turned.
“About Maria?””
Ethan nodded.
“She was the only person your mother trusted inside this house.””
I looked at Maria.
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because your mother knew Richard would control everyone around him.””
She walked slowly toward me.
“She knew he would change records. Manipulate people. Rewrite history.””
I looked at the death certificate.
“Then why did she sign it?””
Maria took a deep breath.
“Because she was trying to save you.””
The detective opened another file.
Inside were hospital records.
“Your mother did not report your death because you died.””
I looked at him.
“Then why?””
He turned the page.
“Because someone else did.””
My heart raced.
“What?””
Thomas stepped closer.
“The hospital records show that another child was listed under your identity.””
Silence.
I understood before he finished.
“My mother switched the records.””
The detective nodded.
“Yes.””
I felt sick.
Not because she betrayed me.
Because I finally understood.
She had been fighting a war nobody knew existed.
“She let the world believe I died…”
Victoria whispered:
“So Richard would stop searching for you.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
Victoria looked devastated.
“Your father wasn’t trying to protect you.””
She swallowed.
“He was trying to find you.””
The room went silent.
Ethan’s expression changed.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at him.
He stepped toward the documents.
“If Richard knew Alexander survived…”
Thomas nodded.
“He spent years trying to locate him.””
I stared.
“Why?””
Nobody answered.
Then Maria whispered:
“Because your father discovered your mother’s plan.””
My blood ran cold.
“And?””
Maria looked at me.
“He realized she had hidden the most valuable thing he ever owned.””
I frowned.
“His son?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
A pause.
“His weakness.””
The words hit differently.
For the first time, I understood.
Richard Hale wasn’t afraid of losing money.
He wasn’t afraid of losing power.
He was afraid of losing control.
The detective looked at the final page.
“There’s one more note.””
I turned.
“What note?””
He read it carefully.
“It says: ‘If Alexander ever learns the truth, bring him to the place where Richard’s first mistake began.’”
Ethan looked at me.
“Do you know what that means?””
I thought about it.
Then I remembered something.
A place my father never allowed me to visit.
A place he called meaningless.
The old family property.
The house where he grew up.
I looked at Victoria.
“My father’s childhood home.””
Her face changed.
May you like
Because she knew.
“That’s where the final answer is.””
