Chapter 9: The Woman From My Mother’s Past

I drove to the cemetery before anyone could stop me.

Victoria followed.

So did Thomas.

But I barely noticed.

My mind was trapped on one sentence.

You were never Richard Hale’s son.

The cemetery was quiet.

Morning fog covered the ground.

And near my mother’s grave stood an elderly woman holding a small envelope.

The moment I saw her face, I knew.

Not because I remembered her.

But because I had seen her before.

In photographs.

The woman beside my mother in the hospital room.

Elizabeth Carter.

She looked at me for a long time.

Then tears filled her eyes.

“You have her eyes.””

I stopped.

“Who are you?””

She smiled sadly.

“You already know.””

I looked at the grave.

“My father said you disappeared.””

Elizabeth laughed softly.

“Your father said many things.””

Victoria stepped forward.

“Elizabeth.””

The older woman looked at her.

“Little Victoria.””

Victoria froze.

“You remember me?””

“Of course I remember you.””

Elizabeth looked at me.

“She was the first child Richard ever stole from someone.””

My expression changed.

“Enough.””

Victoria’s voice shook.

“Don’t talk about him like that.””

Elizabeth looked at her.

“You still defend him?””

Victoria looked away.

Elizabeth sighed.

“That man convinced a six-year-old girl that she was part of a family because he needed a shield.””

Victoria said nothing.

Because she knew it was true.

I looked at Elizabeth.

“Tell me everything.””

She handed me the envelope.

“Your mother wanted you to have this.””

I stared at it.

“My mother?””

Elizabeth nodded.

“She wrote it before she died.””

My fingers tightened around the envelope.

“Why didn’t you give it to me?””

“Because Richard found me.””

The air changed.

“What did he do?””

Elizabeth looked at the ground.

“He gave me a choice.””

“What choice?””

“Disappear forever… or watch your life be destroyed.””

I felt anger rising.

“And you chose to disappear?””

“I chose to survive.””

Her answer was quiet.

Honest.

I couldn’t hate her for that.

She pointed to the envelope.

“Your mother knew the truth.””

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

My mother’s handwriting.

My dear Alexander,

If you are reading this, then Richard failed to hide everything.

My breathing stopped.

She continued.

I need you to know one thing.

Your father loved you.

But love does not erase the damage someone causes.

I looked at Elizabeth.

The letter continued.

The night you were born, Richard made a decision that changed three lives.

Your life.

My sister’s life.

And the life of another child.

My hands trembled.

Another child.

I read faster.

Alexander, the child you grew up knowing as my husband’s heir was not the only child born that night.

The wind moved through the trees.

Victoria whispered:

“What does it say?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because the next line made my entire world collapse.

The child Richard hid was not your sibling.

The child Richard hid was you.

I looked up.

Everyone was silent.

Elizabeth stepped closer.

“Alexander…”

I stared at her.

“Then who am I?””

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

And said:

“You are the son Richard Hale was never supposed to raise.””

I looked back at my mother’s grave.

A final page remained inside the envelope.

One sentence was written across it.

May you like

A sentence that revealed why my father had spent his entire life hiding me.

*“Alexander, if you discover the truth, find the person who was raised in your place.””*
