Chapter 9: The Woman Who Knew Richard

I didn’t sleep that night.

The woman’s voice stayed in my head.

I’m the reason Richard disappeared.

I replayed those words again and again.

By morning, I had one decision.

I needed to meet her.

Her name was Claire Morgan.

She chose a small café far from the city.

When I arrived, I recognized her immediately.

She looked nervous.

Like someone carrying a secret for too long.

“Emily?””

I nodded.

“Claire?””

She smiled sadly.

“You look like your mother.””

I sat down.

“Why did you call me?””

She looked at her hands.

“Because I saw what Richard did at your wedding.””

My stomach tightened.

“What do you mean?””

“The speech. The bill. The way he made himself the hero.””

She shook her head.

“That was always Richard.””

I stared at her.

“Who are you?””

She took a breath.

“I was engaged to him.””

My heart stopped.

“Before my mother?””

“No.””

She looked away.

“Before he left you.””

The café suddenly felt cold.

“Tell me everything.””

Claire nodded.

“Richard and I were together when your mother was pregnant.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He never told her about me.””

My chest tightened.

“He was living two lives.””

Claire continued.

“When he found out your mother was pregnant, he panicked.””

“Why?””

“Because he didn’t want responsibility.””

I looked down.

The pattern was becoming impossible to ignore.

“He promised me he would leave your mother.””

My voice was barely a whisper.

“And he didn’t?””

“No.””

Claire laughed sadly.

“He chose the easier option.””

“What happened?””

“He left.””

I stared at her.

“Then why didn’t you tell my mother?””

Claire looked ashamed.

“Because I was young. I was angry. I thought Richard would come back to me.””

She paused.

“But he never did.””

I sat quietly.

All those years.

Everyone had been waiting for Richard to become someone different.

But maybe he never planned to.

Claire reached into her bag.

“I brought this.””

She placed a folder on the table.

My hands shook.

“What is it?””

“Proof.””

Inside were old messages.

Emails.

Photos.

Everything.

One message from Richard stood out.

“I can’t be tied down with a child. I need freedom.””

I felt tears burn my eyes.

“He wrote this?””

Claire nodded.

“I kept everything because I thought one day you deserved to know.””

I closed the folder.

For years, I imagined my biological father as someone who loved me but lost his way.

Now I was finally seeing the truth.

He didn’t lose me.

He chose not to find me.

When I left the café, I called Michael.

He answered immediately.

“Emily?””

His voice sounded worried.

“I know.””

A pause.

“What?””

“I know everything.””

Silence.

Then:

“Are you okay?””

That question broke me.

After everything.

He still asked if I was okay.

Not if I was angry.

Not if I forgave him.

If I was okay.

“I’m sorry.””

“Emily…”

“No. Please let me say it.””

I wiped my tears.

“I spent my whole life waiting for someone who left me.””

My voice cracked.

“And I ignored someone who never did.””

Michael was silent.

Then I heard him crying.

“I never wanted you to feel like you owed me anything.””

“I know.””

“And I never wanted to replace him.””

“I know.””

I closed my eyes.

“But you were my father.””

The line went quiet.

Then Michael whispered:

“Thank you for finally seeing me.””

That evening, I returned home.

But there was someone waiting outside.

Richard.

He stood beside his Mercedes.

His perfect suit.

His perfect smile.

Gone.

“Emily.””

I stopped.

“What do you want?””

He looked hurt.

“You believe them?””

I stared at him.

“Yes.””

His expression hardened.

“Then you’re choosing them over me?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“I’m choosing the truth.””

For the first time, Richard looked afraid.

Because he realized something.

The daughter he came back to impress was gone.

And the daughter he abandoned had finally found her voice.

Then he pulled out his phone.

“I have one last thing to show you.””

He turned the screen toward me.

And when I saw the message displayed there, my entire body went cold.

Because it was from Michael.

May you like

And it said:

“Emily can never know what happened the night Richard left.””
