Chapter 6: The Woman In The Photograph

I stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.

Michael.

A woman.

A date.

Three days after Richard disappeared.

My mind raced through every memory I had.

Every family dinner.

Every birthday.

Every Christmas morning.

Had I missed something?

Had Michael hidden a part of his life from me?

Richard watched my face carefully.

I hated that I noticed.

Because it meant he was waiting for this reaction.

“You see?”” he said softly.

“There are always two sides.””

I picked up the photograph.

“Who is she?””

Richard leaned back.

“I think Michael should answer that.””

I looked at him.

“You brought me here to make me suspicious.””

“No.””

His expression hardened.

“I brought you here because you deserve the truth.””

I stood up.

“I’m done.””

“Emily.””

I stopped.

Richard’s voice changed.

For the first time, he sounded less confident.

“Before you leave, ask yourself something.””

I looked back.

“Why did Michael never marry your mother?””

I froze.

Because I had never thought about it.

My mother and Michael were together for years.

They loved each other.

At least, I thought they did.

But they never married.

Why?

I walked out.

But Richard’s question followed me all the way home.

That night, I found Michael sitting on his porch.

Like he knew I would come.

He looked older than he had yesterday.

More tired.

“Who is she?””

I asked.

Michael didn’t pretend.

He knew immediately.

“Richard showed you the picture.””

“Yes.””

He looked down.

“Emily…”

“Please.””

My voice broke.

“I need the truth.””

Michael nodded.

“The woman’s name was Laura.””

“Who was she?””

He took a long breath.

“She was my sister.””

I blinked.

“What?””

“She died nineteen years ago.””

The anger inside me suddenly stopped.

“What?””

Michael looked away.

“Three days after Richard left, Laura was in a car accident.””

I didn’t understand.

“Why was there a picture of you with her?””

“Because she helped me.””

“With what?””

Michael’s eyes filled.

“With finding you.””

I stood completely still.

“What?””

He nodded.

“After Richard disappeared, your mother was struggling. She was trying to raise you alone.””

I listened.

“Your mother didn’t want anyone to know how bad things were. She was proud.””

Michael looked at the ground.

“My sister saw me helping you one day. She told me something I never forgot.””

“What?””

He smiled sadly.

“She said, ‘That little girl doesn’t need a replacement father. She needs someone who chooses her.’”

My eyes filled.

“So what happened?””

Michael looked toward the street.

“Laura was the one who encouraged me to stay.””

I whispered:

“And the photo?””

“She took it the first day I realized I wanted to be part of your life.””

I looked down.

The woman in the picture wasn’t a secret lover.

She was someone who helped him become my father.

I felt ashamed.

Because Richard had taken something innocent and turned it into suspicion.

“I’m sorry.””

Michael looked at me.

“For what?””

“For believing him.””

He shook his head.

“No, Emily.””

His voice softened.

“You were trying to understand.””

“But I hurt you.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

“But I’m still here.””

That sentence broke me.

I sat beside him.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then Michael reached into his pocket.

He pulled out his old wallet.

Inside was a small picture.

Me.

When I was three years old.

“I carried this every day.””

I touched the photo.

“Why?””

He smiled.

“Because every day I needed a reason to keep going.””

My tears fell.

Then his phone suddenly buzzed.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What?””

I watched him read the message.

“What is it?””

He handed me the phone.

The message was from Richard.

Only one sentence.

“Tell Emily the real reason you raised her.””

My hands trembled.

Then another message appeared.

A picture.

A document.

And at the top was a name.

Michael Carter.

My heart stopped.

Because underneath his name was a word I never expected to see.

“Adoption.””

I looked at Michael.

“Dad…”

He closed his eyes.

May you like

And whispered:

“I was hoping you would never find out this way.””
