Chapter 10: The Night Everything Changed

I stared at Richard’s phone.

The message from Michael burned into my mind.

“Emily can never know what happened the night Richard left.””

For a moment, I couldn’t hear anything else.

Not the cars passing.

Not the wind moving through the trees.

Not Richard standing in front of me.

All I could see were those words.

“What is this?”” I whispered.

Richard lowered his phone.

“The truth.””

My heart started racing.

“No.””

He looked surprised.

“No?””

I shook my head.

“No, because you’ve lied to me before.””

His jaw tightened.

“You still defend him?””

“I’m not defending anyone.””

I stepped closer.

“I’m asking questions.””

Richard smiled faintly.

“Then ask Michael why he told me to disappear.””

My stomach dropped.

I drove straight to Michael’s house.

I didn’t call.

I didn’t text.

I needed to see his face when I asked.

When he opened the door, he immediately knew something was wrong.

“Emily?””

I held up my phone.

“Why?””

His expression changed.

He looked at the screen.

Then closed his eyes.

“Where did you get this?””

“Richard.””

Michael looked away.

Of course.

That answer hurt.

Not because it surprised me.

Because it confirmed there was something.

“Tell me the truth.””

He stepped outside and closed the door behind him.

“Emily, there are things about that night that you need to understand.””

“Then explain.””

He was silent.

Finally, he said:

“Richard didn’t leave because of me.””

“Then why did he?””

Michael looked at the ground.

“Because he was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“Responsibility.””

I crossed my arms.

“That doesn’t explain the message.””

Michael nodded slowly.

“You’re right.””

He sat down on the porch.

“I should have told you years ago.””

I sat beside him.

For the first time, I wasn’t angry.

I was exhausted.

“What happened?””

Michael stared into the distance.

“The night Richard left, he came to your mother’s house.””

I froze.

“He came back?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he wanted something.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

Michael looked at me.

“Your mother had started the adoption process.””

I listened.

“Richard found out. He came back angry.””

“Why?””

“Because he didn’t want to be responsible for raising you, but he also didn’t want another man becoming your father.””

I felt sick.

“He wanted control.””

Michael nodded.

“He told your mother he would take you.””

I stared at him.

“He wanted custody?””

“Yes.””

“But why?””

Michael’s voice became quieter.

“Because he found out your grandfather had left money for you.””

I felt cold.

“What?””

“Your grandfather created a trust for you when you were born.””

The pieces started connecting.

Richard didn’t come back because he missed me.

He came back because I had something.

Michael continued.

“That night, Richard told your mother he would fight for you.””

“What happened?””

“I told him he needed to think about what he was doing.””

Michael looked at his hands.

“He became angry.””

“Did he hurt you?””

“No.””

A pause.

“But he said something I never forgot.””

“What?””

Michael looked at me.

“He said, ‘If I can’t have the money, nobody will.’”

My breath caught.

“What?””

“I knew then.””

His eyes filled.

“I knew he wasn’t coming back for you.””

I covered my mouth.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because you were three years old.””

“That doesn’t answer the question.””

Michael looked at me.

“Because I didn’t want you growing up believing your biological father was someone who hated you.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“You protected him.””

“No.””

Michael shook his head.

“I protected you.””

The difference between those words broke me.

Then I remembered something.

“The message.””

Michael sighed.

“Richard threatened me.””

“When?””

“The night he left.””

I looked at him.

“He said if I ever told you the truth, he would make sure you hated me.””

My chest tightened.

“So you stayed silent because you thought you would lose me.””

Michael nodded.

“I couldn’t risk it.””

I looked down.

For nineteen years, he carried that secret alone.

Then my phone rang.

It was my lawyer.

The one Daniel had recommended.

“Emily, I need you to come in immediately.””

His voice sounded serious.

“Why?””

“There’s a problem with the wedding account.””

I frowned.

“What problem?””

A pause.

Then:

“Your biological father transferred money from the wedding fund without your permission.””

I stood up.

“What?””

Michael looked at me.

“What happened?””

I stared at my phone.

And suddenly everything made sense.

May you like

Richard hadn’t just wanted to be part of my wedding.

He had been planning something.
