Chapter 8: The Family Secret
I stared at the picture for several minutes.
My mother.
Richard.
Together.
Talking.
The date was from six months earlier.
Before my engagement.
Before Richard appeared.
Before everything changed.
My hands felt numb.
“Emily?””
Michael’s voice pulled me back.
I showed him the phone.
His expression changed immediately.
“I didn’t know about this.””
I believed him.
That was the strange thing.
After everything.
After all the secrets.
Michael was the one person I no longer doubted.
I drove to my mother’s house without saying goodbye.
She opened the door.
And when she saw my face, she knew.
“You saw it.””
I held up my phone.
“Explain.””
She closed her eyes.
“Come inside.””
I didn’t sit.
I couldn’t.
“Why were you meeting him?””
My mother looked exhausted.
“Because he contacted me.””
“And?””
“And I told him to leave you alone.””
I froze.
“You told him that?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She sat down slowly.
“Because I knew what he wanted.””
I shook my head.
“No. Tell me the truth.””
She looked at me.
“The truth is that Richard never came back for you.””
The words hurt.
“Then why?””
“Because he found out you were marrying into a wealthy family.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Daniel’s family owns several businesses. Richard saw your engagement announcement.””
I remembered.
Richard asking questions.
About Daniel.
About the wedding.
About the guests.
I felt sick.
“He used me.””
My mother didn’t answer.
Because she knew.
I walked outside.
I needed to breathe.
Everything I believed was collapsing.
That evening, I met Daniel at a quiet restaurant.
He had barely spoken since the wedding.
I finally understood why.
“I owe you an apology.””
He looked surprised.
“For what?””
“For bringing all this into our marriage.””
Daniel reached across the table.
“Emily, you don’t have to apologize for wanting a relationship with your father.””
I looked down.
“But I ignored the person who actually loved me.””
Daniel was quiet.
Then he said something that surprised me.
“Your dad came to me before the wedding.””
I looked up.
“Michael?””
He nodded.
“When?””
“Two weeks before.””
My heart raced.
“What did he say?””
Daniel smiled sadly.
“He asked me one thing.””
“What?””
“‘Will you love her even on the days she’s difficult to love?’”
My eyes filled.
“That sounds like him.””
Daniel nodded.
“He also told me something else.””
I waited.
“He said, ‘Don’t ever make her feel like she has to earn a place in your family.’”
I covered my face.
Because Michael had been thinking about protecting me even when I was hurting him.
Then Daniel reached into his jacket.
“I have something.””
He placed an envelope on the table.
“What is this?””
“Your wedding photographer sent it to me.””
I opened it.
Inside were photos from the reception.
I saw Richard smiling.
I saw myself standing beside him.
Then I saw Michael.
Sitting alone.
Holding the necklace box.
I looked at another picture.
It was taken right before Michael left.
He was looking at me.
Not with anger.
With love.
I couldn’t breathe.
Then Daniel pointed at one photo.
“Look closer.””
I did.
Behind Michael was Richard.
Talking to someone.
The same person from the message.
My mother.
But this time, there was something else.
A document on the table between them.
I zoomed in.
My heart stopped.
It was a contract.
And at the bottom was Richard’s signature.
The restaurant suddenly felt too loud.
“What is that?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
I stared at the image.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Emily?””
“Yes?””
“You don’t know me.””
My heart started pounding.
“But I knew your father before he left.””
I stood frozen.
“Who are you?””
The woman hesitated.
May you like
Then whispered:
“I’m the reason Richard disappeared.””
