Chapter 2: The Wedding Bill

Richard held a folder in his hand.

At first, I thought it was some kind of surprise gift.

Maybe a letter.

Maybe a memory from the years he missed.

The guests leaned forward with curiosity.

My new husband, Daniel, looked at me and smiled.

“Your dad planned something special,” he whispered.

I smiled back.

But something felt wrong.

Richard walked toward the center of the room like he owned it.

“I know today is about family,” he said into the microphone.

“And family means sacrifice.””

Everyone nodded.

My mother looked uncomfortable.

Michael stood near his table, still holding his speech.

Richard opened the folder.

“I wanted Emily to have the wedding she always dreamed of.””

People applauded.

Then he turned toward me.

“And I made sure every detail was perfect.””

My smile slowly faded.

Because I noticed the expression on Michael’s face.

He wasn’t angry.

He wasn’t surprised.

He looked like he already knew what was coming.

Richard lifted the papers.

“This wedding cost a lot.””

The room became quiet.

“I paid for the venue, the flowers, the catering, the decorations, and the honeymoon.””

A few guests whispered.

I looked at Richard.

“Dad?””

He smiled.

“Yes, sweetheart.””

Then he handed me the folder.

“Your wedding bill.””

The words hit me strangely.

I opened the folder.

Inside were pages of expenses.

Every flower arrangement.

Every meal.

Every chair.

Every detail.

At the bottom was a total.

My stomach dropped.

The number was much higher than I expected.

“Richard,” I whispered, “what is this?””

He laughed softly.

“Don’t worry. I’m not asking you to pay it all today.””

A strange silence filled the room.

“Then why give it to me?””

His smile changed.

“You’re an adult now, Emily.””

I looked around.

Everyone was watching.

“My responsibility was to give you the wedding of your dreams.””

He tapped the papers.

“Now you understand what things cost.””

My cheeks burned.

I felt embarrassed.

Confused.

Then Michael stepped forward.

“Richard.””

Everyone turned.

Michael’s voice was calm.

“What exactly are you trying to say?””

Richard looked at him.

“I’m saying that real fathers provide.””

The room froze.

My heart sank.

Michael stared at him.

“I see.””

Richard smiled.

“You raised her, Michael. That’s admirable.””

The way he said it made it sound like an insult.

“But I’m her biological father.””

My mother stood up.

“That’s enough.””

Richard ignored her.

“I missed nineteen years, yes. But today I showed Emily what a father does.””

I looked at Michael.

His face was pale.

Because I knew exactly what he was thinking.

He had spent nineteen years giving without expecting anything.

And now someone was standing there demanding credit for a single day.

Michael slowly placed his speech on the table.

He didn’t use the microphone.

He didn’t argue.

He simply walked toward me.

“Emily,” he said softly.

I couldn’t look away.

“Yes, Dad?””

It was the first time I had called him that all day.

His eyes filled slightly.

“I wanted to give you something before I left.””

Before I left.

The words scared me.

“Left?””

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small envelope.

“I had planned to say this during my speech.””

My hands trembled as I took it.

“What is it?””

He smiled sadly.

“Open it when you’re ready.””

Then he turned away.

“Wait.””

He stopped.

I wanted to apologize.

I wanted to say I was wrong.

But my pride held me back.

So all I said was:

“Are you leaving because of Richard?””

Michael looked over his shoulder.

“No, Emily.””

His voice was quiet.

“I’m leaving because I finally realized you don’t need me standing beside you anymore.””

Then he walked away.

I watched the man who raised me disappear through the reception doors.

And for the first time that day, I didn’t feel like a bride.

I felt like someone who had just lost her father.

Later that night, after most guests had gone home, I sat alone in the hotel room.

Daniel was asleep beside me.

The wedding dress that everyone had admired was hanging by the window.

The envelope Michael gave me sat on the table.

I stared at it for almost an hour.

Finally, I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

The first line made my hands start shaking.

“Dear Emily, if you are reading this, then I know I have already failed to tell you something important…”

I kept reading.

And then I saw the name at the bottom.

A name I had never expected.

May you like

Because Michael’s letter wasn’t about him.

It was about Richard.
