Chapter 9: The Truth in the Locked Drawer
I didn’t sleep that night.
Not in the hospital chair.
Not in the waiting room.
Not anywhere.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Lily’s face.
The fear.
The confusion.
The way she asked if I was angry because she couldn’t tell me sooner.
Morning arrived slowly.
Gray light entered through the hospital window.
Lily was still sleeping.
Daniel sat beside the wall.
He hadn’t moved much.
“Sarah.””
I didn’t answer.
“I know what it looks like.””
I looked at him.
“No.””
His eyes lowered.
“You don’t know what it feels like.””
He nodded.
“You’re right.””
That surprised me.
No excuses.
No defense.
Just guilt.
“I made mistakes,” he whispered.
“You made choices.””
His face tightened.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
A knock came at the door.
Detective Harris entered.
“We found something at the Carter house.””
Daniel stood.
“What?””
“Your mother’s office.””
My heart raced.
“What about it?””
“It was locked.””
Daniel frowned.
“My mother always keeps that room locked.””
Detective Harris looked at him.
“Why?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I grabbed my coat.
“I’m coming.””
The detective hesitated.
“Mrs. Carter—”
“I need to see what was in that room.””
An hour later, we arrived at Evelyn’s house.
The place looked exactly the same.
That was the worst part.
The same flowers.
The same perfect decorations.
The same house where everyone pretended everything was normal.
Detective Harris opened the office door after receiving permission.
Inside, everything was organized.
Almost too organized.
He searched through drawers.
Then he stopped.
“What?””
He pulled out a small box.
Inside were photographs.
My stomach turned.
Photos of Lily.
Not family photos.
Photos of her playing.
Photos of her eating.
Photos of her sleeping.
I felt sick.
“Why would she have these?””
Daniel looked horrified.
Detective Harris continued searching.
Then he found a notebook.
He opened it.
His expression changed.
“What does it say?””
He read silently.
Then handed it to me.
The pages were filled with notes.
Dates.
Times.
Behaviors.
Every mistake Lily made.
Every time she cried.
Every time she asked for me.
At the top of one page was a sentence:
*She needs to learn that Sarah cannot always save her.*
My hands shook.
Daniel took a step back.
“This isn’t normal.””
No.
It wasn’t.
Detective Harris turned another page.
Then another.
Until he reached the final entry.
The newest one.
The handwriting was darker.
More aggressive.
*Daniel is starting to doubt me. If Sarah finds out, everything falls apart.*
Daniel went completely still.
“She knew.””
I looked at him.
“She knew you were suspicious.””
Detective Harris nodded.
“And she was planning something.””
Before anyone could speak, my phone rang.
It was the hospital.
I answered immediately.
“Hello?””
A nurse’s voice came through.
“Mrs. Carter, you need to come back right away.””
My heart dropped.
“Why?””
There was a pause.
Then the nurse whispered:
“Your daughter woke up.””
I exhaled.
“Is she okay?””
The nurse hesitated.
“No.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What happened?””
The nurse’s voice became quieter.
“She’s asking for you.””
I swallowed.
“That’s all?””
Another pause.
Then:
“She said she remembered something else about the night she got hurt.””
I looked at Daniel.
“What did she remember?””
The nurse took a breath.
“She said she saw who helped Grandma.””
I froze.
“Who?””
The nurse answered.
May you like
“She said it was her father.””
I dropped the phone.
