Chapter 4: The Phone Call He Buried
Daniel’s silence hurt more than any confession could have.
I stared at him across the hospital room, waiting for him to deny it.
Waiting for him to tell me I misunderstood.
But he didn’t.
He just sat there with his hands shaking.
“Daniel,” I whispered.
“What did the school tell you?””
He looked at Lily sleeping peacefully in the bed.
Then he looked at me.
“I got a call from her teacher.””
“When?””
“Two weeks ago.””
My throat tightened.
“Two weeks ago?””
He nodded slowly.
“Her teacher said Lily had been acting differently. She said Lily had become quiet. She stopped playing with the other kids.””
“And?””
Daniel looked away.
“And she asked if something was happening at home.””
The words felt like a slap.
“At home?””
“I told her no.””
“Why?””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
I stepped closer.
“Why did you tell her no?””
Daniel rubbed his face.
“Because Mom told me Lily had been having nightmares. She said Lily was imagining things.””
I looked at Evelyn.
She was standing near the wall, arms crossed, still pretending she was the victim.
“She lied.””
Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.
“Be careful.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Careful? My daughter is lying in a hospital bed.””
Daniel stood.
“Mom, did you hurt Lily?””
The room went silent.
For the first time, someone had asked her directly.
Evelyn stared at her son.
The disappointment on her face was almost theatrical.
“You believe them?””
Daniel swallowed.
“I asked you a question.””
She walked toward him slowly.
“I spent my entire life protecting you.””
“Mom.””
“I raised you alone. I sacrificed everything.””
“That doesn’t answer the question.””
Her expression hardened.
“You’re really going to stand there and accuse me because your wife is emotional?””
I felt something inside me break.
Not because Evelyn was denying it.
Because Daniel was finally seeing her.
The woman he had defended for years.
The woman who always knew how to make him feel guilty.
Detective Harris stepped between them.
“We need everyone to remain calm.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“I want a lawyer.””
The sentence changed the entire room.
Daniel stared at her.
“Mom…”
She grabbed her purse.
“I’m done being attacked.””
She walked toward the door.
But before she left, she stopped beside Lily’s bed.
My entire body reacted.
“Don’t.””
Evelyn looked at me.
Her eyes were cold.
“She’s my granddaughter.””
“No.””
I stepped between them.
“She’s my daughter.””
For several seconds, neither of us moved.
Then Detective Harris spoke.
“Mrs. Carter, please step away from the child.””
Evelyn finally backed away.
But as she passed Daniel, she whispered something.
Quietly.
Almost too quietly for anyone to hear.
“You’re making a mistake.””
Then she left.
The door closed.
And the room felt colder.
Daniel sat down.
I looked at him.
“How long?””
He didn’t answer.
“How long did you know something was wrong?””
His eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t know.””
“You suspected.””
He looked down.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I thought I could handle it.””
I stared at him.
“Handle what?””
He shook his head.
“I thought Mom was just being strict.””
“Strict?””
My voice cracked.
“She was afraid of your mother.””
Daniel covered his face.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
I pointed toward Lily.
“You don’t know what it feels like to watch your child flinch when someone touches her.””
Daniel started crying.
“I’m sorry.””
I wanted to believe him.
I wanted to run into his arms and hear that everything would be okay.
But I couldn’t.
Not anymore.
A small sound came from the bed.
Lily opened her eyes.
“Mommy?””
I immediately went to her.
“I’m here.””
She looked around.
“Is Grandma gone?””
I froze.
“Yes, sweetheart.””
Her shoulders relaxed.
That reaction told me everything.
Then she whispered:
“Daddy promised he wouldn’t let her get mad at me.””
Daniel looked up.
His face collapsed.
“Lily…”
She looked at him.
“I tried to be good.””
Daniel covered his mouth.
My daughter reached for me.
And as I held her, I realized something terrifying.
Lily wasn’t afraid because she thought her grandmother would hurt her.
She was afraid because she thought nobody would believe her.
And then Detective Harris returned to the room.
His expression was serious.
“Mrs. Carter.””
I turned.
“What happened?””
He held a small envelope.
“We found something else.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
May you like
He looked at Daniel.
“Something your husband kept hidden.””
