Chapter 13: The Truth Behind the Photograph
For several seconds after the call ended, nobody moved.
The silence felt heavier than before.
Daniel stood there holding the phone, staring at the blank screen like he was waiting for Mark’s voice to come back.
But it didn’t.
“Who was he talking about?”” I asked.
Daniel looked at me.
His face was full of fear.
“I don’t know.””
Detective Harris stepped closer.
“Mr. Carter, think carefully.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I don’t understand.””
“You said Mark told you the truth was worse than you thought.””
Daniel swallowed.
“He wanted me to think there was something I forgot.””
I stared at him.
“Did you?””
His eyes moved away.
That small movement was enough.
“Daniel.””
He closed his eyes.
“There are pieces of that night I don’t remember.””
My stomach tightened.
“What do you mean?””
“I mean after I left my mother’s house, I was angry. I drove around for hours.””
“Why?””
“Because I hated myself.””
His voice cracked.
“I knew something was wrong, but I didn’t know how to face it.””
Detective Harris looked serious.
“Did anyone contact you?””
Daniel was quiet.
Then he nodded.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
“My mother.””
“When?””
“After I left.””
My hands curled into fists.
“What did she say?””
Daniel looked at Lily.
“She told me she had everything under control.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“She planned this.””
“Yes.””
Detective Harris looked at the photograph again.
“Where was this taken?””
Daniel stared.
“My mother’s living room.””
“And the person behind Lily?””
“Mark.””
The detective nodded.
“We need to find him.””
Before anyone could move, Lily spoke.
“Mommy.””
I immediately went to her.
“I’m here.””
She looked at the photograph.
Her face changed.
“You found that?””
I froze.
“You’ve seen this picture?””
Lily nodded slowly.
“Grandma showed it to me.””
My heart dropped.
“Why?””
“She said it was proof.””
“Proof of what?””
Lily’s eyes filled with tears.
“That nobody would believe me.””
I held her hand.
“Sweetheart, why would she say that?””
Lily looked down.
“Because Daddy came home and said he was sorry.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“I did?””
She nodded.
“You came to my room.””
The room went silent.
“When?””
“After Grandma hurt me.””
Daniel looked like he couldn’t breathe.
“What did I say?””
Lily whispered:
“You said you loved me.””
A tear fell from Daniel’s face.
“But then Grandma called you.””
Everyone waited.
“And you left again.””
Daniel covered his mouth.
He remembered.
Slowly.
Painfully.
“I went back.””
My eyes widened.
“You went back?””
He nodded.
“I remember now.””
Detective Harris looked at him.
“What happened?””
Daniel’s hands shook.
“When I returned, Mark was there.””
My heart raced.
“Why?””
“He said he was helping my mother.””
Daniel looked at Lily.
“I saw him holding that picture.””
“The picture?””
“Yes.””
He looked horrified.
“He told me if I exposed my mother, he would make sure everyone thought I was the one who hurt Lily.””
The room became silent.
The pieces finally connected.
Mark wasn’t protecting Evelyn.
He was protecting himself.
And he had used Daniel’s guilt as a weapon.
Detective Harris immediately called for officers to locate Mark.
Then he looked at Daniel.
“Why didn’t you remember this?””
Daniel swallowed.
“I don’t know.””
I looked at him.
“You don’t?””
He shook his head.
“But I think someone wanted me not to.””
The detective’s expression changed.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel looked at the photograph.
“I think Mark drugged me.””
The room froze.
“Why?””
Daniel’s voice became quiet.
“Because if I remembered, I would have told Sarah.””
A nurse entered suddenly.
“Detective?””
Everyone turned.
The nurse looked nervous.
“We received another call.””
“From who?””
She hesitated.
“From Evelyn Carter.””
My heart stopped.
“She called?””
The nurse nodded.
“She wants to speak with Sarah.””
Detective Harris frowned.
“Did she say why?””
May you like
The nurse looked at me.
“She said she knows who really hurt Lily.””
