Chapter 14: The Confession Nobody Expected

Evelyn’s voice sounded different.

Not angry.

Not confident.

Broken.

The call was placed through Detective Harris’s phone so everyone could hear.

“Sarah?””

I stood still.

“Yes.””

A long pause followed.

Then Evelyn spoke.

“I know you hate me.””

I said nothing.

“I understand why.””

My fingers tightened around Lily’s blanket.

“You hurt my daughter.””

“I know what it looks like.””

“No.””

My voice was cold.

“I know what it is.””

Silence.

Then Evelyn whispered:

“I made mistakes.””

Detective Harris immediately interrupted.

“Mrs. Carter, your location?””

“I’m not telling you yet.””

“Then why are you calling?””

Another pause.

“Because Mark lied to me.””

Daniel looked up.

“What?””

Evelyn continued.

“He told me he was helping. He told me he could fix everything.””

My anger rose.

“You trusted him?””

“I thought I could control him.””

The honesty shocked everyone.

Detective Harris leaned closer.

“Explain.””

Evelyn sighed.

“I was angry at Lily.””

My heart hurt hearing her say it.

“She reminded me of Sarah.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She was always running to you. Always choosing you.””

The room became silent.

Evelyn’s voice trembled.

“I thought if Lily became afraid of leaving me, she would finally need me.””

My hands shook.

“You hurt a child because you wanted her attention?””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“Because I was jealous.””

The admission was worse than any excuse.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Mom…”

Evelyn continued.

“But Mark changed things.””

Detective Harris asked:

“How?””

“He became obsessed with controlling the situation.””

“Obsessed?””

“Yes.””

She sounded afraid now.

“After Daniel started asking questions, Mark told me he would handle it.””

My stomach turned.

“Handle it how?””

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“I thought he meant talking to Daniel.””

Daniel looked at me.

“I never asked him to do anything.””

Evelyn continued.

“Then I saw what he was really doing.””

Detective Harris asked:

“What did he do?””

A pause.

“He started collecting information.””

“About who?””

“Everyone.””

The room went cold.

“Why?””

“Because he wanted control.””

I looked at the photograph.

The hidden camera.

The notes.

The messages.

Mark had been watching.

Detective Harris spoke.

“Where is he now?””

“I don’t know.””

“Then why call?””

Evelyn’s voice broke.

“Because he came to my house.””

“When?””

“Before I left.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“What did he want?””

“He wanted the notebook.””

The room went silent.

“What notebook?”” Detective Harris asked.

Evelyn answered:

“The one I kept.””

My heart dropped.

“The one with all the notes about Lily?””

“Yes.””

Detective Harris looked at Daniel.

“She was documenting everything.””

Evelyn continued.

“Mark said if I gave it to him, everything would disappear.””

I felt sick.

“He threatened you.””

“Yes.””

For the first time, Evelyn sounded like a frightened woman instead of a powerful one.

Then she said something unexpected.

“He said he had one more thing.””

“What?””

“He said Sarah would never forgive Daniel if she knew.””

Daniel looked at me.

I looked back.

“What thing?””

Evelyn went silent.

“Mrs. Carter?””

Her voice became a whisper.

“Mark said Daniel wasn’t just a witness.””

My heart stopped.

“What does that mean?””

A long pause.

Then:

“He said Daniel was the reason Lily got hurt.””

The call ended.

Nobody moved.

Daniel stared at the phone.

“No.””

I looked at him.

Not with anger.

With confusion.

Because after everything…

I still didn’t know what was true.

Then Detective Harris’s phone rang.

He answered.

A few seconds later, his expression changed.

“We found Mark.””

Everyone looked up.

“Where?””

The detective slowly lowered the phone.

“At Daniel’s old apartment.””

Daniel went pale.

“My old apartment?””

Detective Harris nodded.

“The place you lived before you met Sarah.””

Why would Mark be there?

Then the detective added:

“We found something inside.””

“What?””

May you like

He looked at Daniel.

“A recording.””
