Chapter 5: The Video He Never Showed Me

The envelope sat on the table between us.

Nobody touched it.

It looked harmless.

Just a plain brown envelope.

But I knew whatever was inside had the power to destroy the last pieces of my marriage.

Detective Harris opened it carefully.

“There’s a memory card inside.””

Daniel’s face went pale.

I looked at him.

“You know what this is.””

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

His eyes closed.

“I found it yesterday.””

The room spun.

“Yesterday?””

He nodded.

“When Lily came home.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You found evidence your mother hurt our daughter yesterday, and you still didn’t tell me?””

“It wasn’t like that.””

“Then explain.””

Daniel looked at Lily.

She was awake now, quietly watching us.

He lowered his voice.

“Lily had drawn something.””

“What?””

“A picture.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“What picture?””

Daniel swallowed.

“She drew Grandma standing over her.””

A chill ran through me.

“And?””

“She drew herself crying.””

I felt tears burn my eyes.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I thought it was just a child’s drawing.””

I stared at him.

“After everything?””

He shook his head.

“No. That’s not the whole truth.””

Detective Harris looked at him.

“Continue.””

Daniel looked broken.

“When I found the drawing, I went to Mom’s house.””

My hands curled into fists.

“You confronted her?””

“Yes.””

“What did she say?””

Daniel hesitated.

“She said Lily was trying to ruin her relationship with me.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

The blame was always shifted.

“She told me Lily was jealous,” Daniel continued.

My anger rose.

“She said that about a seven-year-old?””

Daniel nodded.

“And I believed her.””

The words were barely audible.

I looked at my husband.

The man I had trusted.

“You believed her over your own daughter.””

“I was wrong.””

“Yes.””

The word came out immediately.

Daniel flinched.

“You were.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Detective Harris inserted the memory card into his laptop.

A video file appeared.

Recorded yesterday.

My breathing became shallow.

“Where did this come from?””

Daniel answered quietly.

“My mother’s house has cameras.””

The video opened.

At first, it showed a living room.

Empty.

Then Evelyn walked in.

A few seconds later, Lily appeared.

Even through the screen, I could see how small she looked.

How nervous.

The audio began.

“Grandma, I want to call Mommy.””

Evelyn’s voice answered.

“No.””

My hands trembled.

“Why?””

“Because your mother always believes you.””

I felt sick.

The video continued.

Lily stood near the couch.

“I didn’t do anything wrong.””

Evelyn walked closer.

“You always make problems.””

“No, Grandma.””

“Your father is tired of your behavior.””

Daniel looked away.

I watched his face.

Every word hurt him.

The video stopped.

Detective Harris paused it.

“We have enough to investigate.””

But I couldn’t look away.

Because there was something worse than the bruises.

The fear.

My daughter had been living in fear inside a house where she was supposed to feel safe.

Daniel whispered:

“I should have protected her.””

I didn’t answer.

Because he was right.

A nurse entered suddenly.

“Mrs. Carter?””

I turned.

“Yes?””

“There’s someone here asking to see Lily.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

The nurse looked uncomfortable.

“Your husband’s father.””

Daniel looked shocked.

“My dad?””

The nurse nodded.

“He said he needs to tell you the truth.””

I looked at Daniel.

“You never told me your father was coming.””

He shook his head.

“I didn’t know.””

The nurse glanced toward the hallway.

“He’s waiting.””

A strange feeling moved through me.

May you like

Because if Daniel’s father had something to say…

Maybe Evelyn wasn’t the only person hiding secrets.
