Chapter 9: The Meeting Nobody Wanted
Ryan chose a quiet coffee shop outside downtown Nashville.
Somewhere private.
Somewhere without cameras.
Somewhere he could control the conversation.
At least, that was probably what he thought.
Emma sat across from him.
I sat beside her.
Sarah sat on the other side.
For the first time in years, all four of us were in the same place.
Ryan looked older than he had the day before.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like the truth had finally caught up with him.
“I didn’t want Emma to find out this way,” he said.
Emma stared at him.
“Then how did you want me to find out?””
He looked down.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s the problem.””
Ryan looked hurt.
“I know I made mistakes.””
Emma shook her head.
“You keep saying mistakes.””
She leaned forward.
“Missing birthdays was a mistake.””
Her voice became stronger.
“Leaving was a choice.””
Ryan closed his eyes.
I saw regret.
But regret after being exposed is different from regret before causing pain.
“I was scared,” he said.
“Of what?””
Ryan looked at me.
Then at Emma.
“When I found out there was a possibility you weren’t my biological daughter…”
Emma went still.
“I thought my whole life was a lie.””
Sarah spoke immediately.
“But you never asked.””
Ryan looked at her.
“I was afraid.””
“No,” Sarah said.
“You were afraid, so you ran.””
He had no response.
Emma looked at him.
“Who paid you?””
Ryan became quiet.
The question everyone had been waiting for.
Finally, he answered.
“Your grandfather.””
Sarah’s face changed.
“What?””
Ryan nodded slowly.
“Your mother’s father.””
Emma looked confused.
“My grandfather?””
“Yes.””
She shook her head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Ryan rubbed his hands together.
“He hated me.””
“Why?””
“Because he thought I wasn’t good enough for Sarah. He thought I would ruin your future.””
Sarah looked shocked.
“My father would never…”
Ryan laughed bitterly.
“He did.””
The pain in his voice sounded real.
But Emma didn’t let him escape.
“And you took the money.””
Ryan looked down.
“Yes.””
Nobody spoke.
The honesty was almost worse.
“I told myself it was temporary.””
Emma whispered:
“Temporary?””
Ryan looked at her.
“I thought I would come back.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Ryan’s eyes filled.
“Because every year I waited, it became harder.””
Emma looked away.
“So you stayed gone because coming back was embarrassing?””
Ryan didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I watched Emma absorb it.
Not just the fact that he left.
But the reason.
He didn’t lose her.
He abandoned the chance to know her.
Ryan reached into his jacket.
He pulled out an envelope.
“I kept this.””
Emma looked at it.
“What is it?””
He placed it on the table.
“Something I should have given you years ago.””
Nobody moved.
Emma stared at the envelope.
Then she looked at Ryan.
“What’s inside?””
Ryan swallowed.
“A letter.””
“From you?””
“No.””
His voice dropped.
“From your grandfather.””
Emma slowly reached for it.
Her fingers touched the envelope.
Then stopped.
Because written across the front was a name.
A name that made Sarah gasp.
A name none of us expected to see.
May you like
Emma looked up.
“Why is Mark’s name on this?””
