Chapter 12: The Test That Was Never Finished

The coffee shop became silent again.

But this silence felt different.

This time, it wasn’t about betrayal.

It was about waiting.

Waiting for the truth.

“Dr. Collins,” I said, “what are you saying?””

The woman on the phone took a breath.

“I’m saying the original test was never completed.””

Emma stepped closer.

She could hear everything.

“Why not?””

The nurse answered carefully.

“Because the sample disappeared.””

Sarah looked shocked.

“Disappeared?””

“Yes.””

I felt cold.

“Who had access?””

There was a pause.

“Several people.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No,” she admitted.

“It isn’t.””

Emma looked at me.

“Ask her what happened.””

I nodded.

“What happened to the sample?””

Dr. Collins lowered her voice.

“The request was canceled.””

“By who?””

Another pause.

Then:

“Your wife’s father.””

Sarah froze.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

Emma sat down slowly.

“So Grandpa stopped the test.””

Dr. Collins continued.

“He told the hospital there was no need to continue.””

I looked at Sarah.

“Why would he do that?””

Nobody knew.

Then the nurse said something unexpected.

“Because he already believed he knew the answer.””

My heart stopped.

“What answer?””

The woman was quiet.

Then she said:

“He believed Mark was Emma’s biological father.””

The words hit harder than anything before.

Emma covered her mouth.

Ryan looked down.

Sarah started crying.

I couldn’t move.

Fifteen years.

Fifteen years of wondering if I belonged.

And the person who knew might have been someone who never told me.

“Dr. Collins,” I said slowly.

“Why are you telling us now?””

Her voice became emotional.

“Because I kept a copy of the original request.””

My breathing stopped.

“A copy?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“I have it.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Emma whispered:

“Can we see it?””

The nurse answered:

“Yes.””

A meeting was arranged for the next morning.

After the call ended, nobody moved.

Ryan looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“For what?””

“For making you feel like you weren’t her father.””

The apology surprised me.

Because I had spent years being angry at Ryan.

But standing there, I realized something.

He had lost too.

Not because he was innocent.

He wasn’t.

He made choices.

But he had been manipulated by fear.

And those choices destroyed him too.

Emma walked outside.

I followed.

We stood in the parking lot.

The sky was turning orange.

A normal evening.

Except nothing about our lives felt normal anymore.

“Are you scared?”” she asked.

I looked at her.

“Yes.””

She seemed surprised.

“Really?””

I nodded.

“Because if the test says I’m not your biological father…”

I stopped.

She grabbed my hand.

“Don’t.””

“What?””

“Don’t say that.””

“Emma…”

She shook her head.

“I spent years thinking blood was the reason people mattered.””

She looked toward the building.

“Ryan taught me that wasn’t true.””

Then she looked back at me.

“You taught me something else.””

“What?””

“That people choose you.””

My eyes filled.

She squeezed my hand.

“You chose me every day.””

I smiled.

“And I’ll keep choosing you.””

For the first time since graduation, she smiled.

A real smile.

Then the next morning came.

Dr. Collins was waiting outside a small office.

She looked older than I expected.

But her eyes were kind.

“I’m sorry it took this long,” she said.

I nodded.

“Thank you for coming forward.””

She handed me a folder.

Emma looked at it.

Ryan stood behind us quietly.

Sarah held her breath.

Dr. Collins opened the folder.

“There is one thing you should know before you read this.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She glanced at the papers.

“The result was not the only thing your grandfather hid.””

My stomach tightened.

“What else?””

She looked directly at Emma.

“He also changed the emergency contact information on your birth records.””

Emma frowned.

“Why?””

Dr. Collins answered:

“Because he wanted to make sure one person would always have legal access to you.””

I looked at the paperwork.

A name appeared.

A name none of us expected.

Emma whispered:

“Who?””

Dr. Collins pointed to the page.

May you like

And everyone froze.

Because the name written there was mine.
