Chapter 13: The Father Written in the Records
For a few seconds, nobody understood what we were seeing.
The paper sat between us.
My name.
My information.
My signature.
A signature I didn’t remember giving.
Emma stared at the page.
“Mark…”
I couldn’t answer.
Because I was searching my own memory.
Trying to find a moment.
A conversation.
Anything.
But there was nothing.
Dr. Collins noticed my confusion.
“You didn’t sign this recently.””
I looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
“This document was created shortly after Emma’s birth.””
Sarah stepped closer.
“But how?””
Dr. Collins took the paper back gently.
“Years ago, hospitals handled certain situations differently. When there were questions about a child’s care, emergency guardianship information could be updated.””
I looked at the form.
“But I wasn’t her guardian.””
Dr. Collins shook her head.
“Not officially.””
She pointed at the page.
“But your name was listed as the person her mother trusted most if anything happened.””
Emma looked at Sarah.
“Mom?””
Sarah covered her mouth.
“I didn’t know.””
“You didn’t?””
She shook her head.
“I knew your grandfather was involved with paperwork. I knew he wanted to control everything. But I didn’t know he changed this.””
Dr. Collins looked at me.
“Your name was added because Sarah told the hospital you were the one person she trusted.””
I looked at Sarah.
Her eyes filled.
“I was scared.””
She whispered.
“Ryan was angry. My father was controlling everything. I didn’t know who would actually stay.””
A painful silence followed.
Then Emma asked the question everyone was avoiding.
“So Grandpa knew?””
Dr. Collins nodded.
“Yes.””
“He knew Mark might be my father?””
“Yes.””
“And he still let everyone believe Ryan was?””
Dr. Collins looked down.
“He believed he was protecting you.””
Emma laughed softly.
But there was no happiness in it.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
She looked around.
“Everyone was protecting me.””
Her voice cracked.
“But nobody trusted me enough to tell me the truth.””
Nobody argued.
Because she was right.
I had spent years making decisions for Emma because I loved her.
But love without honesty could still create wounds.
Dr. Collins handed us another envelope.
“This is the final DNA result.””
Nobody moved.
Emma looked at me.
“You should open it.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
She looked surprised.
“Why?””
“Because whatever it says, I want you to know something first.””
I took her hands.
“You are my daughter.””
Her eyes filled.
“Mark…”
“No test changes fifteen years.””
I smiled.
“No piece of paper can erase every morning I drove you to school. Every night I helped you study. Every time I sat beside you when you were scared.””
A tear fell down her cheek.
“You were my father before anyone wrote it down.””
She hugged me.
Right there.
In front of everyone.
The same girl who had turned away from my flowers at graduation was now holding me like she was afraid I might disappear.
I closed my eyes.
For the first time in two days, I felt like I could breathe.
Then Emma pulled back.
“But we still need to know.””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
She opened the envelope.
The room became silent.
She read the first line.
Then she stopped.
I watched her face.
I knew.
Before she said anything.
I knew.
Emma looked at me.
A small smile appeared through her tears.
“Mark.””
My heart raced.
“Yes?””
She handed me the paper.
I looked down.
The result was clear.
The probability was overwhelming.
There was no confusion.
No question.
After fifteen years of loving a child who wasn’t sure I was hers…
I finally had the answer.
I was her father.
Biologically.
Legally.
Emotionally.
All of it.
Sarah started crying.
Ryan sat down.
He looked broken.
Emma looked at him.
“Ryan.””
He lifted his eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
The apology surprised everyone.
“I’m sorry you lost years with me.””
Ryan nodded.
“I did.””
“But that wasn’t because of Mark.””
Ryan closed his eyes.
“I know.””
Emma looked at him.
“You were my father.””
A small tear rolled down his face.
“But you weren’t there.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
There was no anger left in her voice.
Only sadness.
And acceptance.
Then Dr. Collins cleared her throat.
“There is one more thing.””
We all looked at her.
She held another document.
“A note was attached to the original file.””
My stomach tightened.
“From who?””
She looked at the page.
“Your grandfather.””
Emma frowned.
“What did he say?””
Dr. Collins read the first line.
And everyone froze.
“‘If Mark ever learns the truth, he needs to know why I chose him.’”
I looked at Emma.
May you like
The answer wasn’t finished.
Not yet.
