Chapter 3: The Year Everything Changed

Emma followed us to a quiet bench behind the graduation hall.

The celebration continued around us, but the laughter felt far away.

She sat between her mother and me.

Ryan stood several feet away, pretending not to listen.

He was listening.

Everyone knew it.

Emma held the letter in her hands.

“Tell me.””

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

I had learned over the years that when Emma got truly hurt, she became quiet.

When she was little, she cried loudly.

When she was older, she went silent.

Sarah reached for her hand.

“Emma, this is complicated.””

Emma looked at her.

“I’m eighteen now. I think I deserve the truth.””

Sarah closed her eyes.

She knew Emma was right.

I looked at the ground.

“I met you when you were three.””

Emma nodded.

“I know.””

“You probably remember your first house. The yellow one.””

A small smile appeared.

“You painted my bedroom purple.””

I smiled too.

“You hated it after two days.””

“I said it was too bright.””

“You cried because you thought I would be mad.””

Emma looked away.

“I remember.””

Those memories were still alive.

That was the hardest part.

The love had been real.

Even if today hurt.

I continued.

“When I met your mom, Ryan had already been gone for months.””

Emma frowned.

“Gone?””

Sarah looked at her.

“He left before Mark came into our lives.””

Ryan suddenly stepped forward.

“That’s not fair.””

Emma turned.

“You said you were always there.””

Ryan’s expression changed.

“I was your father.””

“But were you there?””

The question stopped him.

I had never heard Emma challenge him like that before.

Sarah took a shaky breath.

“Ryan left because he wasn’t ready for the responsibility.””

Ryan shook his head.

“That’s not what happened.””

Sarah looked at him.

“Then tell her.””

He went quiet.

That silence answered more than any argument could.

Emma looked at me.

“So when you came into our lives…”

“I didn’t come in to replace anyone.””

“I know.””

Her voice cracked slightly.

“I think that’s what hurts.””

I looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

She wiped her eyes.

“I spent years thinking you were just trying to be nice.””

The words broke something inside me.

“Emma…”

“I thought maybe you were doing all those things because you felt sorry for me.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Then why?””

I smiled sadly.

“Because I loved you.””

She looked down.

A tear fell onto the scholarship letter.

Ryan stepped closer.

“Emma, don’t let this manipulate you.””

Her head lifted.

“Manipulate me?””

He immediately softened.

“I just mean you’re emotional.””

She stared at him.

“No. I’m thinking clearly for the first time.””

Nobody spoke.

Ryan looked offended.

“I’m your father.””

Emma nodded slowly.

“You are.””

He seemed relieved.

Then she continued.

“But being my father didn’t stop you from missing everything.””

His face changed.

She continued.

“You missed my first award ceremony.””

Silence.

“You forgot my birthday twice.””

Another silence.

“You didn’t know my favorite subject.””

Ryan looked away.

“And you didn’t know I was scared of driving until Mark sat with me in a parking lot for three months.””

I looked at her.

I never told anyone about those nights.

Emma smiled faintly.

“He never told me he paid for my driving lessons either.””

Sarah looked at me.

“You did?””

I shrugged.

“She needed confidence.””

Emma covered her mouth.

For the first time that day, she looked at me the way she used to.

Like I was home.

Then Ryan’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

He stepped away to answer.

A few seconds later, his voice became angry.

“What do you mean the interview changed?””

Emma noticed.

So did I.

Ryan ended the call quickly.

“What was that?”” she asked.

“Nothing.””

But Emma knew him.

She knew when he was hiding something.

And then she looked at me.

“Mark.””

“Yes?””

She pointed toward Ryan.

“What else don’t I know?””

Before I could answer, Sarah reached into her purse.

Her hands were shaking.

She pulled out an old photograph.

One I had not seen in years.

She placed it in Emma’s hands.

Emma looked at it.

Her face slowly changed.

Because the picture showed something she had never known.

Something from the year she was three.

Something involving Ryan.

And someone else.

May you like

Emma whispered:

“Who is this woman?””
