Chapter 8: The Secret Between Three People
I had imagined many difficult conversations with Emma.
I imagined telling her about her first heartbreak.
Her first failure.
Her first major disappointment.
I never imagined sitting across from her, watching her question the one thing I had always believed.
Our family.
“Emma…”
My voice failed.
She looked scared.
Not angry.
Scared.
That hurt more.
Because I never wanted her to feel uncertain about me.
Sarah was still on the phone.
“Mark, tell her.””
I closed my eyes.
Then I told the truth.
“I don’t know.””
Emma stepped back.
The words hurt her.
I saw it.
“You don’t know?””
I shook my head.
“When I met your mother, I knew you were three years old. I knew Ryan was your biological father.””
“Then why would you say you don’t know?””
“Because before I met you…”
I stopped.
The memory came back.
A hospital room.
A young Sarah crying.
A doctor speaking carefully.
A question nobody wanted to answer.
“I met your mother before your birth.””
Emma froze.
“What?””
I looked down.
“Not like that.””
I needed her to understand.
“I wasn’t involved with Sarah romantically. I was just someone who knew her family.””
Sarah spoke softly.
“It was complicated.””
Emma looked at the phone.
“Mom?””
Sarah sighed.
“When you were born, there was a medical situation.””
I looked at Emma.
“Your mother was scared.””
“I was terrified,” Sarah admitted.
“You were born early. There were concerns. Tests were done.””
Emma listened carefully.
“And?””
I swallowed.
“And one test created confusion.””
Silence.
“What kind of confusion?””
Sarah answered.
“The hospital paperwork had a mistake.””
Emma looked lost.
“What does that mean?””
“It means Ryan was listed as your father because everyone believed he was.””
I stared at the floor.
“But there was never a complete confirmation.””
Emma’s face changed.
“You mean…”
Sarah’s voice broke.
“We never knew for certain.””
The room became painfully quiet.
Emma looked at me.
“And you?””
I shook my head.
“I never cared about that.””
“But you wondered?””
I didn’t lie.
“Sometimes.””
She looked hurt.
“Why didn’t you find out?””
I smiled sadly.
“Because by the time I had the chance, you weren’t a question anymore.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“You were my daughter.””
Those words broke through.
She sat down.
For a moment, she didn’t speak.
Then she asked:
“Does Ryan know?””
Sarah answered.
“I think he suspected.””
My stomach tightened.
“That’s why.””
Emma looked at me.
“That’s why he left?””
“Maybe,” Sarah said.
“He was told there was a chance you weren’t his. Someone used that fear against him.””
Emma looked down.
“So he abandoned me because he was scared?””
I didn’t answer.
Because the answer was complicated.
Sarah did.
“He made a choice.””
Emma nodded slowly.
A painful understanding appeared on her face.
She wasn’t just discovering a secret.
She was discovering that adults could make selfish decisions and still call them love.
My phone suddenly buzzed.
A message appeared.
It was from Ryan.
I opened it.
Only one sentence.
*We need to talk before Emma finds out the rest.*
Emma saw my expression.
“Who is it?””
I looked at the screen.
Then back at her.
“Ryan.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“What does he want?””
I didn’t know.
But I knew one thing.
He wasn’t asking for a conversation.
He was trying to control the timing.
I stood.
“I think we need to hear what he has to say.””
Emma shook her head.
“No.””
I looked surprised.
She wiped her tears.
“No more secrets.””
She picked up her jacket.
“I want to go.””
“Where?””
She looked toward the door.
“To see my father.””
A pause.

Then she added:
“Both of them.””
