Chapter 9: The Memory I Lost
I sat down because my legs couldn’t hold me anymore.
Seven years.
A photograph.
A memory I didn’t have.
It felt like my own mind was betraying me.
“I don’t understand.””
Charles smiled.
“That’s because someone made sure you wouldn’t.””
I looked at Victoria.
She looked away.
That was enough.
“You knew.””
Her eyes filled with guilt.
“Yes.””
My voice became quiet.
“You knew I had been here before?””
Victoria nodded.
“I knew.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
She looked down.
“Because you didn’t remember.””
I felt anger rising.
“You let me walk into this house and discover everything by accident.””
“No.””
Victoria looked at me.
“I brought you here because I knew you were the only person who could finish what you started.””
The words hit me.
“What I started?””
Evelyn stepped closer.
“Claire, seven years ago, you worked here.””
I stared at her.
“No.””
“Yes.””
She opened a drawer and pulled out another file.
Inside was an old employee record.
My name.
My handwriting.
My signature.
I couldn’t breathe.
“I was a waitress here?””
Evelyn nodded.
“You were the only employee who tried to help Emma.””
I looked toward the little girl.
Emma was staring at me.
“You remember me?””
Her tiny voice broke something inside me.
“I…”
I couldn’t answer.
Because suddenly I saw it.
A flash.
A little blonde girl hiding behind a curtain.
Me kneeling beside her.
Saying:
“Don’t worry. I’ll come back.””
Then another memory.
A scream.
A heavy door closing.
And Charles standing there.
I grabbed the edge of the table.
“What happened?””
Nobody answered.
Then Victoria spoke.
“Charles found out you knew.””
My heart raced.
“What did he do?””
She looked at me.
“He made sure you forgot.””
The room became silent.
The officer frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Victoria looked at the files.
“Seven years ago, Claire was injured.””
I touched my head.
A scar hidden beneath my hair.
A scar I had always thought came from an accident.
“You lied to me.””
Victoria nodded.
“Yes.””
Charles interrupted.
“You’re all forgetting something.””
Everyone turned.
He looked calm again.
Too calm.
“The past doesn’t matter.””
The officer stepped forward.
“It matters if it proves abuse and evidence tampering.””
Charles smiled.
“Maybe.””
Then he looked at me.
“But ask Claire one question.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
He pointed toward the file.
“Why did she leave Emma behind?””
My heart stopped.
I looked at Emma.
The little girl looked down.
A tear rolled down her face.
“I waited for you.””
The words crushed me.
I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
“I’m sorry.””
Emma shook her head.
“You promised.””
I closed my eyes.
A memory returned.
A promise.
A little hand holding mine.
A hidden room.
A door closing.
And my own voice whispering:
“I’ll come back tomorrow.””
But I never did.
Because someone made me forget.
The officer opened another file.
“This isn’t over.””
He pulled out a document.
“This was found inside the room.””
He handed it to me.
I read the title.
And my blood went cold.
*CONFESSION LETTER — WRITTEN BY CLAIRE BENNETT.*
I looked at Victoria.
“I never wrote this.””
Charles smiled.
“That’s what makes it interesting.””
I opened the letter.

The first sentence made my hands shake.
