Chapter 7: The Room Nobody Was Supposed to Find

The mansion had always felt enormous.

But after Emma pointed toward the east wing, it felt endless.

The officer looked at her carefully.

“Emma, are you sure?””

The little girl nodded slowly.

Her fingers gripped the edge of my sleeve.

“I don’t like that room.””

I lowered myself beside her.

“Why?””

She looked toward Charles.

Because even now, after everything, she was still afraid of him.

“He said Mommy went away.””

Evelyn covered her mouth.

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“Emma…”

The little girl looked at her.

“I heard you crying.””

The hallway became completely silent.

Charles’s face lost its confidence for the first time.

The officer noticed.

“Mr. Whitmore, what is she talking about?””

Charles quickly looked away.

“She’s a child. She doesn’t understand what she heard.””

I stood up.

“Then why are you scared?””

His eyes snapped toward me.

For a second, the billionaire mask disappeared.

Only anger remained.

“You have no idea what you’re involved in.””

I stepped closer.

“I know enough.””

The officer raised a hand.

“Everyone stays where they are.””

Two officers moved toward the east hallway.

Charles immediately followed.

“Officer, that area contains private property.””

The officer stopped.

“We are investigating a report involving a child.””

Charles smiled.

“You’re making a mistake.””

The officer looked at him.

“Maybe.””

Then he continued walking.

The entire family followed.

Even Victoria.

She looked exhausted.

Like she had spent years carrying something too heavy.

I walked beside her.

“You knew about that room.””

She didn’t answer.

“Victoria.””

Her voice came out barely above a whisper.

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“What was inside?””

She stared ahead.

“The truth.””

That answer scared me.

The east wing was darker than the rest of the mansion.

The walls were covered with old family portraits.

Generations of Whitmores smiling for cameras.

Perfect families.

Perfect lies.

Emma suddenly stopped.

“That door.””

She pointed.

At the end of the hallway stood a wooden door.

No handle.

No lock.

Just a small metal panel beside it.

The officer examined it.

“How do we open this?””

Emma looked at Charles.

“He knows.””

Everyone turned.

Charles stood still.

For the first time, he looked trapped.

The officer walked toward him.

“Mr. Whitmore?””

Charles said nothing.

Victoria whispered:

“Open it.””

He looked at her.

“You don’t want this.””

Her eyes filled with anger.

“No. I wanted you to stop.””

A long silence passed.

Then Charles stepped forward.

He placed his hand on the panel.

A small light turned green.

The door opened.

Cold air rushed out.

I expected something terrifying.

Instead, I saw something worse.

A room that looked untouched.

A small bed.

A table.

A bookshelf.

Children’s drawings taped to the wall.

And in the center…

a camera.

My stomach turned.

“This wasn’t a prison,” I whispered.

Evelyn walked inside.

“It was a recording room.””

She looked around.

“He watched everything.””

Charles immediately said:

“You’re twisting the truth.””

I ignored him.

On the table were dozens of files.

Photos.

Reports.

Medical records.

Emma’s name appeared everywhere.

But then I saw another folder.

My hands froze.

*EVELYN WHITMORE — INCIDENT REPORT*

I opened it.

The first page made my heart stop.

*Subject displayed resistance after discovering financial misconduct.*

I looked at Evelyn.

“What did he do?””

She didn’t answer.

Charles stepped forward.

“Give me that.””

The officer blocked him.

“No.””

I turned the page.

Then another.

And another.

It wasn’t about Emma.

It was about Charles.

Illegal payments.

Fake accounts.

Threats against employees.

And one final document.

A signed statement.

My eyes widened.

Because the signature belonged to Victoria.

I looked at her.

“You helped him.””

Victoria’s face fell.

“I was trying to survive.””

Evelyn looked at her sadly.

“And I was trying to save my daughter.””

The words hurt.

Because both sounded true.

Then a noise came from the camera.

A tiny red light blinked.

Recording.

The officer looked up.

“This camera is active.””

Charles suddenly moved.

Too fast.

He grabbed the device from the table.

But the officer stopped him.

“Step back.””

Charles froze.

Then smiled.

“You still don’t understand.””

He looked directly at the camera.

“Everything you found was planned.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Charles looked at me.

“The person who brought you here wanted you to discover this.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who?””

Charles smiled.

May you like

Then pointed at Victoria.

“She did.””
