Chapter 14: The Person Behind Everything

I knew that voice.

Before I even turned around.

Because some voices stay with you.

Some voices become nightmares.

Charles Whitmore stood in my childhood home.

No guards.

No lawyers.

No smile.

Just him.

The officer immediately reached for his weapon.

“Mr. Whitmore, don’t move.””

Charles raised his hands.

“I’m not here to run.””

I stared at him.

“How did you find us?””

He looked at the metal box.

“Because I knew exactly where you would look.””

My heart sank.

“You planted the clue.””

“No.””

He smiled sadly.

“You did.””

I froze.

“What?””

Charles stepped closer.

“Seven years ago, after everything happened, you knew your memory was damaged.””

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.””

“You wrote yourself instructions.””

He pointed at the envelope.

“You knew you might forget.””

My hands tightened.

The worst part was…

I believed him.

Because the handwriting was mine.

“You’re saying I planned this?””

“Yes.””

Charles looked around the house.

“You were smarter than anyone gave you credit for.””

Victoria stepped forward.

“Stop manipulating her.””

Charles looked at her.

“Still protecting her?””

“No.””

Victoria’s voice was firm.

“I’m protecting Emma.””

For the first time, Charles looked defeated.

Only for a second.

Then he laughed.

“You all think I’m the only villain here.””

The officer stepped forward.

“Enough games.””

Charles looked at Dr. Kaplan.

“Tell them.””

Dr. Kaplan remained silent.

“Tell them who signed the first agreement.””

Everyone looked at him.

My heart sank.

“Andrew?””

Dr. Kaplan closed his eyes.

“I made a mistake.””

Charles smiled.

“He wasn’t just my doctor.””

The room went silent.

“He was my partner.””

Victoria looked shocked.

“No.””

Dr. Kaplan shook his head.

“Not anymore.””

Charles laughed.

“You helped build this.””

Dr. Kaplan looked broken.

“I helped cover it up.””

I felt sick.

Everyone had a piece of the truth.

Everyone had hidden something.

Charles looked at me.

“But Claire…”

He stepped closer.

“You were the only one who never stopped looking.””

I remembered my mother’s warning.

The truth.

The files.

The hidden room.

The child behind the painting.

All connected.

“You destroyed my family.””

Charles’s expression changed.

“No.””

He looked toward the recorder.

“Your family destroyed itself.””

I hated that a part of me wondered if he was right.

Because the truth was complicated.

People were not just heroes or villains.

But some choices could not be forgiven.

The officer searched the box again.

Then found something hidden beneath the bottom layer.

A second recording.

He played it.

My mother’s voice returned.

But this time…

she sounded terrified.

“If Charles is listening to this, I failed.””

A pause.

“But if Claire is listening…”

The recording crackled.

“Trust Evelyn.””

I looked at Evelyn.

She looked shocked.

My mother continued.

“She was the only person who tried to stop him.””

Charles’s face changed.

Impossible.

Pure anger.

“No.””

Evelyn stepped back.

“You knew.””

Charles stared at her.

“You ruined everything.””

The officer immediately moved toward him.

But Charles wasn’t looking at the police.

He was looking at Evelyn.

“She was the reason.””

I frowned.

“The reason for what?””

Charles smiled.

A cold, empty smile.

“The reason Emma was hidden.””

Everyone froze.

I looked at Evelyn.

“No.””

Evelyn started crying.

“Claire…”

My heart dropped.

Because I knew that look.

Not guilt.

Pain.

Regret.

The kind someone carries when they have been silent for too long.

She whispered:

“I never wanted it to happen.””

The officer asked:

“What happened?””

Evelyn looked at Emma’s photograph.

Then at me.

May you like

And said:

“I was the one who put Emma behind that wall.””
