Chapter 3: The Secret Guest

The voice came from the darkness near the staircase.

I turned slowly.

A man stepped into the hallway.

Charles Whitmore.

Victoria’s husband.

The man whose name was printed on every invitation that night.

The billionaire everyone wanted to meet.

He looked nothing like the charming businessman from the magazines.

His smile was gone.

His eyes were fixed on the hidden room.

“Claire Bennett,” he said.

Hearing my full name from him made my skin crawl.

“How do you know who I am?””

Charles adjusted his expensive watch.

“My employees know everyone who enters my home.””

Victoria looked at him sharply.

“You weren’t supposed to be here.””

He laughed softly.

“Neither was she.””

I moved closer to Emma.

Charles noticed.

“Still protecting her?””

“Yes.””

He sighed.

“People always think they understand things they know nothing about.””

I hated that sentence.

Everyone in this house kept saying the same thing.

As if money gave them the right to hide the truth.

I pointed at Emma.

“She’s a child.””

Charles looked at her.

“She is a problem.””

Emma immediately covered her ears.

I felt anger rise in my chest.

“You don’t talk about a little girl like that.””

Charles walked closer.

Victoria stepped between us.

“Stop.””

For a moment, I saw something strange.

Fear.

Not from me.

From Charles.

Victoria was afraid of him.

That changed everything.

“You told me you had control,” Charles said quietly.

“I did.””

“No. You failed.””

The words hung in the air.

I looked at Victoria.

“You’re not protecting her.””

She didn’t answer.

Charles smiled.

“Finally, someone notices.””

Victoria turned toward him.

“Leave.””

“After all these years?””

His smile widened.

“You really think you can erase what happened?””

Emma started crying.

I knelt beside her.

“Emma, what happened?””

She looked at Charles.

Then at Victoria.

Then she whispered:

“My father didn’t die.””

The hallway went silent.

Victoria’s face changed.

“Emma.””

The little girl continued.

“He told me to hide because they were fighting.””

My heart stopped.

“Who was fighting?””

Emma’s eyes filled with tears.

“My mom and dad.””

I looked at Victoria.

“You told everyone her father was gone?””

Victoria said nothing.

Charles stepped closer.

“She doesn’t know the whole story.””

“Then tell me.””

He smiled.

“I will.””

Victoria’s voice suddenly became sharp.

“Charles, don’t.””

But he reached into his jacket and pulled out a small black notebook.

He tossed it onto the table.

“This is why Emma was hidden.””

I picked it up.

The cover was worn.

Inside were pages filled with dates, names, and handwritten notes.

My eyes moved down the first page.

Then I froze.

Because the first name written there was not Emma’s.

It was mine.

*Claire Bennett — employee hired specifically for tonight.*

I looked up.

Charles was smiling.

“You weren’t hired to serve champagne.””

My fingers tightened around the notebook.

“Then why was I hired?””

Charles leaned closer.

“Because Victoria needed someone to discover the room.””

Victoria’s face turned pale.

May you like

And for the first time that night…

she looked terrified.
