Chapter 5: The Woman Who Vanished
The footsteps stopped at the bottom of the stairs.
I couldn’t see who was there.
The darkness swallowed everything.
“Who’s there?”” I called.
No answer.
I reached for my phone flashlight.
The beam cut through the hallway.
A woman stood there.
My heart stopped.
She was wearing a white dress.
Her hair was messy.
Her face was pale.
But the most shocking thing was not how she looked.
It was who she was.
Victoria gasped.
“No.””
The woman looked directly at her.
“You didn’t expect me to come back.””
Victoria stepped backward.
“Evelyn…”
I looked at Charles.
For the first time all night, he looked completely terrified.
The woman walked closer.
“Hello, Charles.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then Emma whispered from behind the painting.
“Mommy?””
The woman’s eyes filled with tears.
“Emma.””
I froze.
The woman turned toward the hidden room.
“Emma, baby, I’m here.””
The little girl started crying.
“Mommy!””
I stared at Victoria.
Then at the woman.
“You’re Emma’s mother?””
She nodded.
“My name is Evelyn Whitmore.””
The missing woman.
The woman everyone thought was gone.
Charles found his voice.
“This is impossible.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“No. What’s impossible is that you thought you could erase me.””
Victoria looked like she couldn’t breathe.
“I thought you were…”
“Dead?””
Evelyn finished.
She laughed bitterly.
“You wanted everyone to think that.””
I felt the pieces slowly coming together.
“You weren’t missing.””
Evelyn looked at me.
“I was trapped.””
The hallway became silent.
She pointed toward the hidden room.
“Just like my daughter.””
My eyes moved toward Emma.
“What happened?””
Evelyn looked at Charles.
“Ask him.””
Charles immediately shook his head.
“She was unstable.””
Evelyn’s expression hardened.
“That’s what you told everyone.””
Victoria whispered:
“Charles…”
He turned toward her.
“Don’t.””
The warning in his voice made her stop.
I noticed something.
Victoria wasn’t protecting Charles.
She was afraid of him.
Evelyn walked toward me.
“You were the person I needed to find.””
I frowned.
“What?””
She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small flash drive.
“I sent the messages.””
My heart raced.
“You sent the photo?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I needed someone outside this family.””
She looked toward Victoria.
“Someone who wasn’t controlled.””
Victoria looked away.
Evelyn continued.
“Charles owns the security system. He controls the cameras. He controls the employees. He controls every story told inside this house.””
Charles laughed.
“You’re making yourself sound innocent.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“I’m not.””
That surprised me.
She continued:
“I made mistakes.””
Her eyes moved toward Emma.
“But I never tried to erase my child.””
The honesty in her voice made me listen.
She handed me the flash drive.
“Everything you need is on there.””
Charles suddenly stepped forward.
“Give me that.””
I moved back.
“No.””
His face changed.
The charming billionaire disappeared.
“Claire.””
His voice became cold.
“You have no idea what you’re holding.””
“Then explain.””
He stared at me.
“It will prove Victoria helped me.””
I looked at Victoria.
Her face went pale.
“What?””
Charles smiled.
“She wants you to think she’s the hero.””
Victoria whispered:
“I was trying to protect Emma.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“You protected yourself first.””
The words hurt because they sounded true.
I looked at the flash drive.
One device.
Three people.
And three different versions of the truth.
Then the mansion security alarm suddenly started screaming.
Red lights flashed across the hallway.
Charles looked at the ceiling.
Then smiled.
“Finally.””
I frowned.
“Finally what?””
He looked toward the front entrance.
“The police are here.””
My heart dropped.
“Good.””
Charles shook his head.
“No.””
He smiled.
“They’re not here for me.””
The front doors opened.
Several officers rushed inside.
May you like
And the first words I heard were:
“Claire Bennett, step away from the child.””
