Chapter 9: The Mother I Thought I Lost
I didn’t sleep.
I couldn’t.
My entire life had been built on things I believed were true.
My father was gone.
My mother was gone.
Vanessa was my wife.
My home was safe.
My family was protected.
And now every piece of my life felt like a carefully built illusion.
The next morning, Daniel found me sitting in the office.
“You look like you haven’t slept.””
I handed him the photograph.
He stared at it.
“Is this real?””
“I don’t know anymore.””
He examined the picture carefully.
“Michael, we need to verify this.””
Before we could continue, my phone rang again.
Same unknown number.
I answered immediately.
“Who are you?””
A pause.
Then:
“Your mother.””
I closed my eyes.
“Where are you?””
“I can’t tell you yet.””
My anger exploded.
“You called me after thirty years and you can’t tell me where you are?””
“I know you’re angry.””
“You disappeared.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone says that.””
Silence.
Then she said:
“Vanessa knows the truth.””
My body went still.
“What truth?””
“Your father didn’t die because of an accident.””
The room became silent.
“What are you saying?””
“He was investigating the people who wanted your family destroyed.””
I gripped the phone.
“Who?””
“I don’t have time.””
A sound came through the line.
Like someone was nearby.
Then my mother whispered:
“Michael, you need to get your children out of that house.””
The call ended.
I immediately stood.
Daniel looked at me.
“What happened?””
I grabbed my jacket.
“We’re leaving.””
When I got upstairs, Caleb was already awake.
He looked at me.
“Is something wrong?””
I forced myself to stay calm.
“No.””
But he saw through me.
“Dad.””
I stopped.
He walked closer.
“Is Emma safe?””
That question hurt.
Because my son had stopped asking if everything was okay.
He only asked if they were safe.
I knelt down.
“Yes.””
I hugged him.
“I promise.””
But promises were becoming harder to make.
As we packed, Vanessa appeared in the doorway.
“Where are you going?””
I looked at her.
“Somewhere my children can sleep without being afraid.””
Her face changed.
“Michael…”
“No.””
I held up my hand.
“I need the truth.””
She looked exhausted.
“I know.””
“Then tell me.””
She sat down.
“My mother knew your father.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“She introduced me to him years ago.””
I stared.
“Why?””
“Because your father was looking for someone who could expose the people stealing from his company.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Because your father used me.””
The anger in her voice was real.
“He asked me to get close to Robert. To find out who was behind everything.””
I froze.
“What?””
She nodded.
“But then things changed.””
“How?””
She looked toward the children’s rooms.
“I started wanting the life I was pretending to have.””
I didn’t know what to believe anymore.
“You still hurt my children.””
She lowered her head.
“I know.””
For a moment, she looked genuinely ashamed.
Then her phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
And all the color disappeared from her face.
“What?””
I watched her carefully.
“Who is it?””
She didn’t answer.
The phone slipped from her hand.
I picked it up.
A message was displayed.
One sentence.
*Eleanor has been found.*
Then another message appeared.
*But she is not alone.*
I looked at Vanessa.
She whispered:
“They found her.””
“Who?””
Vanessa looked toward the front door.
Her voice barely audible.
“The person who started all of this.””
May you like
And at that exact moment…
someone knocked.
