Chapter 7: The Letter My Father Hid
I held the envelope in my hands, but I couldn’t open it.
Not because I didn’t want to know.
Because I was afraid of what I would find.
My father had always been the strongest person I knew.
He built his company from nothing.
He taught me that honesty mattered more than wealth.
He taught me that family came before everything.
But now Robert was standing in my doorway, telling me my father knew someone would come after us.
And Vanessa was standing behind me, terrified.
“Michael,” Vanessa said quietly.
“Give me that envelope.””
I turned around.
“No.””
Her face changed.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
Fear.
Not anger.
Not frustration.
Fear.
“You don’t understand what’s inside.””
“That’s exactly why I’m opening it.””
Robert stepped back.
“This is between you and the truth.””
I looked at him.
“You were part of this.””
He nodded.
“I was.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I made mistakes.””
I laughed without humor.
“Mistakes?””
I pointed toward the house.
“My children were scared in their own home.””
Robert looked down.
“I know.””
That answer bothered me.
“How do you know?””
He didn’t respond.
And that silence told me there were still secrets everywhere.
I took the envelope into my office and locked the door.
Caleb stood outside.
“Dad?””
I opened the door.
He looked at me.
“Is it about Mom?””
I crouched down.
“I don’t know yet.””
He looked at the envelope.
“Is it something bad?””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know.””
Caleb nodded slowly.
Then he said something that I would never forget.
“Dad, sometimes not knowing is worse.””
He was eight years old.
Eight.
And he already understood fear better than most adults.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
My father’s handwriting.
My hands trembled as I read.
Michael,
If you are reading this, then something happened that I hoped would never happen.
I stopped.
My chest tightened.
I discovered someone inside our company was trying to access the family trust accounts. I don’t know who yet, but I know they are patient. They will not attack directly. They will enter our lives slowly.
I looked at the date.
Seven years ago.
Before my father died.
Before Vanessa entered my life.
I continued reading.
The person will try to gain your trust. They will make you believe they need you. They will make themselves impossible to question.
My fingers tightened around the paper.
Because I knew exactly who that sounded like.
I created a second account with evidence of everything I found. The location is hidden because I couldn’t risk anyone discovering it.
I flipped the page.
The next line made my heart stop.
The only person I trusted with this information was Eleanor.
Eleanor.
My father’s longtime assistant.
She had disappeared shortly after he died.
Everyone thought she retired.
I kept reading.
If something happens to Eleanor, do not trust anyone who claims they are helping you.
I lowered the letter.
My father had known.
He had been afraid.
And I never knew.
A knock came at the door.
Daniel.
“Michael?””
I opened it.
He looked at my face.
“What happened?””
I handed him the letter.
He read quickly.
Then looked up.
“Eleanor.””
I nodded.
“We need to find her.””
But before we could move, Caleb ran into the room.
“Dad!””
His face was pale.
“What happened?””
“Emma is missing.””
My blood turned cold.
“What?””
“I was watching her. I only looked away for a second.””
I ran.
The entire house became chaos.
“Emma!””
No answer.
I searched every room.
The kitchen.
The bedrooms.
The backyard.
Nothing.
Then I saw the laundry room door.
Closed.
My heart stopped.
I rushed toward it.
“Emma!””
A tiny voice answered.
“Daddy?””
I unlocked the door.
Emma was inside.
Crying.
Holding her stuffed rabbit.
I pulled her into my arms.
“Who put you in here?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
I looked around.
The door wasn’t locked from the outside.
It had been pushed closed.
Then I saw something on the floor.
A piece of paper.
Three words.
Written in black ink.
*Stop looking, Michael.*
I stared at it.
May you like
Because whoever wrote it had been inside my house.
And they were still watching us.
