Chapter 4: The Man From Her Past

I didn’t move when I saw him standing behind Vanessa.

For a moment, I thought my mind was playing tricks on me.

The man outside my window looked older, thinner, but I knew that face.

I had seen it before.

Years ago.

Before Vanessa became my wife.

Before she moved into my house.

Before she became the person my children called “Mom.””

I walked toward the glass.

“Who is that?”” I asked.

Vanessa immediately stepped away from the window.

“Michael, don’t do this.””

That answer told me everything.

“You know exactly who I’m talking about.””

She looked toward the backyard.

The man was gone.

Like he had never been there.

I grabbed my jacket.

“Where did he go?””

Vanessa blocked the doorway.

“You’re making yourself paranoid.””

I stared at her.

“Paranoid?””

My voice shook.

“My daughter was locked in a room. My son recorded you because he was scared. Money disappeared from their trust accounts. And now a stranger who knows my family is standing outside my house.””

Her face hardened.

“You’re choosing to believe children over me.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I’m choosing to believe what I can see.””

For once, Vanessa had no quick response.

That night, I checked every security camera around the house.

The front door.

The driveway.

The backyard.

But the strange thing was the footage from the side yard.

It had been deleted.

Only that section.

Only the moment when the man appeared.

I called Daniel.

“Someone erased camera footage.””

He went silent.

“Michael, you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“Vanessa didn’t just have access to the children’s accounts.””

I waited.

“She had access to your home security system.””

My stomach dropped.

“How?””

“You added her as an administrator when you installed it after your father passed away.””

I closed my eyes.

A memory came back.

Vanessa sitting beside me on the couch.

Her hand on my shoulder.

“I’m your family now, Michael. You don’t need to carry everything alone.””

I believed her.

I trusted her.

And that trust was now being used against me.

The next morning, I woke up before sunrise.

I went downstairs and found Caleb sitting on the floor near the living room window.

He was holding the little recorder.

He looked exhausted.

“Couldn’t sleep?””

He shook his head.

“Is Mom leaving?””

The question caught me off guard.

I sat beside him.

“I don’t know yet.””

Caleb looked down.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“You did.””

“No.””

He swallowed.

“I wanted to tell you when it first started.””

I waited.

“The first time she locked Emma away, she told me if I said anything, she would make sure you never believed me.””

My heart broke.

“What did she say exactly?””

Caleb’s eyes filled with tears.

“She said, ‘Your dad loves me. He won’t destroy his family because of two scared kids.’”

I felt anger rising inside me.

But I kept my voice calm.

“Caleb, listen to me.””

He looked at me.

“You never have to protect Emma alone again.””

He nodded slowly.

Then he reached into his pocket.

“I found something else.””

He handed me a folded piece of paper.

I opened it.

It was a drawing.

A child’s drawing.

A house.

A family.

Me.

Caleb.

Emma.

And Vanessa.

But Vanessa was standing far away.

I looked at him.

“Why did you draw her like that?””

He whispered.

“Because she doesn’t feel like part of our family.””

Before I could answer, my phone rang.

Daniel.

I picked up immediately.

“Michael, I found the person from the security footage.””

My entire body went still.

“Who is he?””

A pause.

Then Daniel said:

“His name is Robert Hale.””

The name meant nothing.

Until he continued.

“He was Vanessa’s fiancé before you.””

I looked toward the stairs.

Vanessa was standing there.

Listening.

Daniel kept talking.

“She never told you because Robert disappeared after a major financial investigation.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What investigation?””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Fraud.””

I looked at Vanessa.

Her face had gone pale.

May you like

And I knew.

Whatever was happening in my house had started long before I came home early.
