Chapter 11: The Person Pulling The Strings

I ran outside before anyone could stop me.

“Michael!”” Daniel shouted behind me.

But I was already in the driveway.

I looked around.

Nothing.

No car.

No person.

Only the cold evening air.

I checked the picture again.

My children.

Standing near the backyard fence.

The image was recent.

Someone had been watching us.

Someone was close.

I turned around.

“Caleb!””

He came running with Emma behind him.

I immediately pulled them close.

“Stay inside.””

Caleb looked at me.

“Someone took our picture, didn’t they?””

I froze.

“How did you know?””

He looked down.

“Because they’ve done it before.””

My stomach twisted.

“What?””

Caleb swallowed.

“Sometimes I saw a car outside when you were gone.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked shocked.

“You never told me.””

Caleb’s eyes filled with tears.

“I tried.””

That sentence hurt every time.

I turned to Vanessa.

“How long?””

She looked away.

“I thought it was Robert.””

“Thought?””

She nodded.

“I didn’t know.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Eleanor opened the envelope.

Inside was a small storage card.

“Your father recorded everything.””

We moved back inside.

Daniel connected it to the computer.

A video appeared.

My father.

Older.

Tired.

Sitting in his office.

I had never seen him look afraid before.

“Michael,” he said on the screen.

My chest tightened.

“If you are watching this, then I failed to protect you.””

I looked away.

Hearing his voice after years was painful.

“My brother has been stealing from the company for years.””

My eyes widened.

“He has people everywhere. He uses fear. He uses money. He uses trust.””

My father paused.

“And the most dangerous thing about him is that he never gets his own hands dirty.””

The video continued.

“He makes others do it for him.””

The screen showed documents.

Names.

Accounts.

Transfers.

Then one name appeared.

Vanessa.

She closed her eyes.

I looked at her.

My father’s voice continued.

“Vanessa was manipulated. But she also made choices.””

That was the part I needed to hear.

Not an excuse.

Not forgiveness.

The truth.

The video ended with one final message.

“Michael, protect your children. They are the only thing he cannot control.””

The room stayed silent.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“I don’t know if that’s enough.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

For the first time, she didn’t defend herself.

She accepted it.

Suddenly, the lights went out.

Everyone froze.

The house became completely dark.

Emma grabbed my hand.

“Daddy?””

“I’m here.””

A sound came from upstairs.

A door opening.

Daniel reached for his phone flashlight.

“Someone is inside.””

We moved slowly.

Up the stairs.

Every step felt louder.

At the end of the hallway, my bedroom door was open.

I knew I had closed it.

Inside, everything had been searched.

Drawers open.

Papers everywhere.

But only one thing was missing.

The envelope from my father.

I turned around.

Vanessa was standing behind me.

Her face was pale.

“Where is it?””

I looked at her.

“You tell me.””

She shook her head.

“I didn’t take it.””

Then Eleanor suddenly looked toward the window.

Her expression changed.

“What?””

She walked closer.

There was a mark on the glass.

A symbol.

One my father had shown her years ago.

She whispered:

“He’s here.””

I looked outside.

A figure stood near the trees.

Watching.

Then my phone rang.

I answered.

A man’s voice spoke.

“Hello, nephew.””

My blood turned cold.

Because I had never heard that voice before.

But I knew exactly who it was.

May you like

My uncle.

The man everyone thought was dead.
