Chapter 13: The Estate Of Forgotten Secrets

I drove toward the old family estate with one thought repeating in my mind.

My mother was alive.

After thirty years of believing she was gone, she was somewhere inside the place where my family’s secrets began.

I didn’t know whether I wanted answers or an explanation.

Maybe both.

Daniel sat beside me.

“We need to be careful.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

But the truth was, I wasn’t thinking like a lawyer.

I was thinking like a son.

Like a father.

Like someone who had spent too long watching people he loved hide the truth.

Behind us, police vehicles followed.

This time, I wasn’t walking into the unknown alone.

When we arrived, the estate looked exactly how I remembered it.

The giant wooden doors.

The cracked stone pathway.

The old oak tree where my father used to take me fishing.

But the house felt different.

Empty.

Cold.

Like it had been waiting.

We entered slowly.

The first room was my father’s old office.

Everything was covered in dust.

Except for one desk.

Someone had been using it recently.

On top of the desk were files.

Company documents.

Trust records.

And photographs.

Photographs of me.

Of Caleb.

Of Emma.

I felt sick.

My uncle had been watching us.

Not recently.

For years.

Daniel picked up a file.

“Michael.””

I looked at him.

His expression was serious.

Inside the file were records of every major event in my life.

My wedding.

The birth of my children.

My father’s death.

Even my mother’s disappearance.

Someone had documented everything.

Then we heard a voice.

“You finally came.””

I turned.

My uncle stood at the doorway.

Older than I expected.

Gray hair.

Calm eyes.

The same eyes my father had.

But without warmth.

“Where is my mother?””

He smiled.

“Still thinking about her first?””

My anger exploded.

“Where is she?””

He stepped aside.

“She’s upstairs.””

I moved forward.

Daniel grabbed my arm.

“Michael.””

I stopped.

My uncle smiled.

“You always were like your father.””

“What does that mean?””

“You believe doing the right thing makes you powerful.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“Protecting my family makes me powerful.””

For the first time, his expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

He didn’t expect that answer.

“Your father said the same thing.””

I looked at him.

“You were jealous of him.””

He laughed quietly.

“Your father had everything.””

“He had integrity.””

“He had luck.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“He had people who loved him.””

The silence that followed was heavy.

Then my uncle looked upstairs.

“Go see your mother.””

I didn’t trust him.

But I needed answers.

I walked upstairs.

The door at the end of the hallway was open.

Inside was a woman sitting near the window.

She turned.

And everything stopped.

Because even after thirty years…

I knew her.

“Michael.””

My eyes filled instantly.

“Mom?””

She stood slowly.

Her hands covered her mouth.

“I’m sorry.””

I wanted to be angry.

I wanted to ask why.

Why she left.

Why she let me believe she was dead.

But when she stepped closer, I saw something.

Fear.

The same fear I had seen in my children.

“Why?””

My voice broke.

“Why did you leave me?””

She cried.

“Because your father asked me to.””

I froze.

“What?””

She sat down.

“Your father discovered your uncle’s plan. He knew if your uncle thought I knew everything, I would become a target.””

“So he told everyone you were dead?””

She nodded.

“He wanted me hidden.””

I shook my head.

“And I was supposed to live without my mother?””

Tears rolled down her face.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

I looked away.

Everyone kept saying that.

Protecting.

Protecting.

Protecting.

But nobody asked what it cost.

Then she reached into her pocket.

“I kept this for you.””

She handed me a small key.

“My husband said one day you would need it.””

I looked at it.

“What does it open?””

She whispered:

“The final account.””

My uncle appeared at the doorway.

And for the first time…

he looked nervous.

“Give me that key.””

My mother stood.

“No.””

His face changed.

“After everything, you still choose him?””

She looked at me.

“I choose my son.””

The words were simple.

But they meant everything.

My uncle stepped forward.

Then the police entered behind him.

“Don’t move.””

His expression turned cold.

But before they could arrest him, he smiled.

“You think this ends with me?””

May you like

He looked at the key.

“You still don’t know what your father left behind.””
