Chapter 8: The Man Outside the School

I didn’t remember ending the phone call.

I only remembered standing there, staring at Maya.

My daughter looked like she was waiting for me to become someone she feared.

Someone angry.

Someone who would walk away.

Instead, I sat down.

“Tell me.””

She wiped her face.

“I didn’t know how to tell you.””

The same words.

Everyone in my family had used them.

I was beginning to hate them.

“Who is he?””

She hesitated.

“His name is Daniel.””

The room seemed to get colder.

Nicole appeared in the doorway.

The moment she heard the name, her face changed.

“Maya.””

My daughter looked at her.

“You knew he contacted me.””

Nicole went pale.

“What?””

Maya laughed sadly.

“Don’t pretend.””

I looked between them.

“Someone explain.””

Maya opened her phone.

She showed me a message.

Unknown number.

The first one was dated three months earlier.

I read it.

“Your mother kept me away from you. I’m trying to fix what she broke.””

My hands tightened.

“He contacted you?””

Maya nodded.

“At first, I ignored him.””

“Then?””

“He knew things.””

“What things?””

She swallowed.

“Things about me.””

Nicole stepped forward.

“He manipulated you.””

Maya looked at her.

“You manipulated me first.””

The words were quiet.

But they hurt.

Nicole stopped.

Maya continued.

“He told me he knew my favorite book. He knew the name of my childhood dog. He knew where I went to elementary school.””

I looked at Nicole.

“How?””

She didn’t answer.

“How, Nicole?””

Her voice cracked.

“Because Daniel was there before you.””

The truth landed like a weight.

“Explain.””

Nicole sat down.

“Daniel and I were together before I met you.””

“I know that.””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“You don’t know everything.””

I felt exhausted.

Every answer created another question.

“Keep going.””

Nicole took a breath.

“When I left Daniel, I was pregnant.””

I froze.

Maya looked away.

“Pregnant with Maya.””

The room went silent.

I looked at my daughter.

Then at Nicole.

“No.””

Nicole started crying.

“I didn’t know how to tell you.””

My entire body went numb.

“Are you saying…”

“Yes.””

She whispered.

“Maya is not my biological daughter.””

I looked at Maya.

My daughter.

The girl who had my last name.

My habits.

My stubbornness.

My heart.

“What?””

Maya’s eyes filled with tears.

“I found out six months ago.””

Six months.

Another secret.

Another person carrying pain alone.

“I thought you were my dad,” she whispered.

I walked toward her.

“You are my daughter.””

“But what if—”

“No.””

I held her shoulders.

“Listen to me.””

She looked at me.

“You don’t lose a father because of a piece of paper.””

Her tears fell.

“But you lost a wife.””

That sentence stopped me.

Because she was right.

I had lost the version of Nicole I thought existed.

I turned around.

Nicole was crying.

“Why?””

She covered her face.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That if you knew the truth, you’d see me as someone broken.””

I shook my head.

“You didn’t trust me.””

“I know.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You didn’t trust me enough to let me choose.””

Nobody spoke.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Daniel.

I opened it.

One sentence.

“I think it’s time you learned why Nicole really left me.””

I looked at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

A photograph.

A hospital record.

And a name.

Not Maya.

Not Jordan.

May you like

Another child.

A child I had never heard of.
