Chapter 6: The Truth Nobody Wanted to Say

I read the letter three times.

Then a fourth.

The words didn’t change.

They just became heavier.

Jordan may not be your biological son.

I pushed the letter away.

“No.””

Ethan didn’t argue.

He just sat there.

Waiting.

“You’re wrong.””

“I hope I am.””

I stood up.

“Hope?””

My voice shook.

“You’re telling me my six-year-old son might not be mine, and all you can say is you hope?””

People in the coffee shop looked over.

I didn’t care.

Ethan lowered his voice.

“I didn’t know how to tell you.””

“You didn’t.””

I grabbed my jacket.

“Neither did Nicole.””

When I got home, Nicole was sitting on the couch.

She knew.

The second she saw my face, she knew.

“Michael…”

“Who is he?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Who?””

“Don’t do that.””

I placed the letter on the table.

“Who is Jordan’s biological father?””

Nicole covered her mouth.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

And that silence was the answer.

I stepped back.

“How long?””

“Michael…”

“How long have you known?””

She started crying.

“Since before we got married.””

The pain was different from anger.

It was something deeper.

A feeling like the ground beneath my entire life had disappeared.

“You knew before I said my vows.””

“Yes.””

“And you let me raise him.””

Her voice broke.

“You loved him.””

“That’s not the point.””

“It is to me.””

I looked toward the stairs.

At the place where Jordan slept.

The little boy who called me Dad.

The little boy who climbed into my bed after nightmares.

The little boy whose first steps I recorded.

Whose birthday cakes I made.

“You should have told me.””

“I was afraid.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I looked at her.

“Do you know what I’m afraid of?””

Nicole cried silently.

“I’m afraid every memory I have is now something I have to question.””

“No.””

She stood.

“Michael, please listen.””

“I’m listening.””

She wiped her tears.

“The man who wrote that letter was dangerous.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“His name is Daniel.””

“Who is Daniel?””

Nicole sat down slowly.

“He was someone from my past.””

“Your son’s father?””

She nodded.

“Before I knew what kind of person he was.””

“What did he do?””

She looked toward the hallway.

“I left because I was scared.””

The room became quiet.

“What does he want?””

Nicole looked at me.

“Jordan.””

My stomach dropped.

“Why?””

“Because he found out about him.””

I stared.

“And Ethan knew?””

“Yes.””

“And Maya?””

“No.””

Nicole shook her head.

“Maya only knew I was scared.””

I looked at the woman I married.

The woman I thought I understood.

“You should have trusted me.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice softened.

“You made my daughter sacrifice school because you thought you had to carry everything alone.””

Nicole looked down.

“I thought I was protecting my family.””

“But you were destroying it.””

She closed her eyes.

And for the first time, she didn’t defend herself.

She just nodded.

That night, I sat beside Jordan’s bed.

He was asleep, holding the stuffed dinosaur he had carried since he was three.

I watched him breathe.

The question haunted me.

Was he still my son if biology said otherwise?

Then his eyes opened.

“Dad?””

I smiled.

“Yeah, buddy?””

“Are you mad at me?””

My heart broke.

“No.””

“Mom said sometimes people leave when things get hard.””

I froze.

“Did she say that?””

He nodded.

“She said I might lose people.””

I touched his hair.

“Listen to me.””

He looked at me.

“You are my son.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“Forever?””

“Forever.””

But after he fell asleep, I walked downstairs.

Nicole was waiting.

She had another envelope in her hand.

“I didn’t show you everything.””

I stared at it.

“What now?””

She hesitated.

Then she handed it to me.

Inside was a DNA test request.

Already signed.

Already dated.

And the name listed as the person requesting it wasn’t Daniel.

It wasn’t Ethan.

It was Maya.

My daughter had secretly ordered a test.

And the reason why was written in a note attached to the paperwork:

“I need to know if the man who raised Jordan is the same man who raised me.””

I looked up at Nicole.

“What does this mean?””

May you like

She whispered:

“Michael… Maya knows something about her own past too.””
