Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Missing Days

I spent the next ten minutes standing in my kitchen, waiting for someone to explain my own life to me.

Nobody did.

Nicole kept rearranging groceries that didn’t need rearranging. Maya stared at the floor. Emma sat at the table, confused by the silence.

Finally, I said, “Everyone leaves this room except Maya.””

Nicole looked up.

“Michael—”

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

“No more pretending everything is fine.””

Nicole’s face tightened.

“I’m her stepmother. I’ve taken care of her.””

Maya flinched.

I noticed.

And I hated that I noticed it too late.

“Maya,” I said, “tell me everything.””

She looked at Nicole.

Nicole shook her head slightly.

A warning.

A threat.

My daughter saw it.

And that was when something inside me broke.

“Maya,” I said softly, “you don’t have to protect anyone right now.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t want you to fight.””

“Fight?””

She nodded.

“Every time I told her I couldn’t miss school, she said you were stressed. She said you couldn’t handle another problem.””

I looked at Nicole.

“You told her that?””

Nicole stepped forward.

“I was trying to keep the family together.””

“By making our daughter skip school?””

“It was temporary.””

Maya laughed bitterly.

“No, it wasn’t.””

She walked to her backpack and pulled out a notebook.

“I wrote everything down.””

Nicole’s face changed.

“What?””

Maya opened the notebook.

Every page had dates.

Times.

Notes.

Monday: Picked up Jordan at 8:15. Stayed home until 3.

Wednesday: Mom left at 9. Came back after school ended.

Friday: Mom said not to tell Dad.

My hands trembled as I turned the pages.

“Maya…”

“I knew you wouldn’t believe me.””

“Why would you think that?””

She looked at me.

“Because you always believe her.””

The words landed harder than I expected.

Because they were true.

I had spent years assuming Nicole handled everything because she always looked organized. She packed lunches. Managed appointments. Remembered birthdays.

I never asked what it cost.

I never asked who was carrying the weight.

Nicole grabbed the notebook.

“That’s enough.””

I stepped between them.

“No.””

Her eyes flashed.

“You’re taking your daughter’s side over mine?””

I stared at her.

“This isn’t about sides.””

“It feels like it.””

“It’s about why my child thinks she has to keep a record of her life.””

Nicole went quiet.

Then Jordan appeared at the doorway.

He held his tablet.

“Mom?””

Nicole turned immediately.

“Go upstairs.””

“But—”

“Now.””

Jordan walked away slowly.

Maya watched him leave.

Then she said something that made my blood run cold.

“She doesn’t leave me home because Jordan needs me.””

I looked at her.

“Then why?””

Maya hesitated.

“She leaves because she says she has appointments.””

“What kind of appointments?””

“I don’t know.””

Nicole laughed nervously.

“See? She doesn’t know anything.””

But Maya didn’t look at her.

She looked at me.

“She comes back smelling like expensive perfume.””

Nicole’s face went pale.

“Maya.””

“What?”” Maya snapped.

“You told me not to lie to Dad.””

The room became painfully quiet.

I looked at my wife.

“Who are you meeting?””

“No one.””

“Then why are you scared?””

“I’m not.””

“You are.””

Nicole grabbed her purse.

“I need air.””

She walked toward the door.

I followed.

“Where are you going?””

“Just out.””

“After this?””

She stopped.

For a moment, I thought she would finally tell me.

Instead, she said, “You’re making a mistake, Michael.””

Then she left.

That night, I barely slept.

I sat at my desk reading the school notice again and again.

The dates.

The absences.

The proof that my daughter had been carrying a secret alone.

At 2:13 in the morning, my phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

Then I saw the picture attached.

It was Nicole.

Standing outside a hotel.

With someone I recognized.

Someone I never expected.

The message underneath contained only six words:

“You need to know who she’s protecting.””

I stared at the photo.

Then another message arrived.

May you like

This time with a name.

And the moment I read it, I knew my family’s secret was much bigger than missed school days.
