Chapter 10: The Brother Who Changed the Truth

I stared at Ethan’s signature until the ink blurred.

For several seconds, I convinced myself I was reading it wrong.

Maybe I was tired.

Maybe my mind was searching for another person to blame.

But the name remained.

Ethan Carter.

My brother.

The man who had claimed he was trying to protect me.

The man who had helped Nicole.

The man who had known every secret before I did.

I placed the paper on the table.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Because if I moved too quickly, I was afraid I would break something.

“Michael?””

Nicole’s voice sounded distant.

I looked at her.

“Did you know?””

Her face changed.

That was all I needed to see.

“You knew.””

“No.””

The answer came too fast.

“No, I didn’t know about this.””

“But you knew Ethan was involved.””

She looked down.

“I knew he helped with the paperwork.””

My heart sank.

“You let him handle medical documents about my children?””

“He said he was trying to help.””

I laughed.

A quiet, painful laugh.

“Everyone says that.””

I picked up the test results.

“Everyone is helping me by keeping me blind.””

Nobody spoke.

Maya sat at the table, watching all of us.

Jordan was upstairs.

I was grateful.

He didn’t need to see another adult break apart.

I grabbed my jacket.

“Where are you going?”” Nicole asked.

“To talk to my brother.””

“Michael, please.””

I stopped.

Not because I wanted to.

Because I heard the fear in her voice.

But this time, I couldn’t let fear decide everything.

“I need answers.””

Ethan opened the door before I knocked.

Like he had been waiting.

That made me angrier.

“You knew I would come.””

He looked tired.

“Yes.””

I held up the paper.

“Explain.””

His eyes moved to the signature.

Then away.

“I made a mistake.””

“A mistake?””

My voice rose.

“You changed a DNA test.””

“I changed information on a request form.””

“Why?””

He didn’t answer.

“Why, Ethan?””

Finally, he stepped aside.

“Come in.””

I walked into his house.

The place felt different.

Like I was seeing him for the first time.

“Tell me everything.””

He sat down.

“When Daniel came back, I knew he was dangerous.””

“Dangerous how?””

“He wanted control.””

“Over Nicole?””

“Over everyone.””

I crossed my arms.

“That still doesn’t explain why you changed the test.””

Ethan looked at me.

“Because I thought the truth would destroy your family.””

I stared.

“You thought you had the right to decide that?””

“No.””

“Then why?””

He looked down.

“Because I know what losing a family feels like.””

The anger in my chest slowed.

“What are you talking about?””

He took a deep breath.

“Before Lily died, I made a mistake.””

I said nothing.

“I ignored the warning signs. I thought I knew better. I thought I could handle everything.””

His voice cracked.

“When I lost her, I promised myself I would never watch another family fall apart if I could stop it.””

I shook my head.

“You didn’t save us.””

“I know.””

“You took away my choice.””

“I know.””

“You lied.””

“I know.””

The repetition made him look broken.

But I wasn’t ready to forgive him.

Not yet.

“Why did you change Maya’s results?””

He looked at me.

“I didn’t.””

I froze.

“What?””

“I changed the request details because I was afraid Daniel would use the test against her.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

Ethan pulled out a file.

Inside were copies of messages.

Threats.

Daniel’s name appeared again and again.

“He wanted proof Maya wasn’t yours.””

I read one message.

“Once Michael knows she isn’t his, he’ll send her away.””

My stomach turned.

“He said that?””

“Yes.””

“And you believed him?””

“I believed he would use it.””

Ethan looked at me.

“Because Daniel doesn’t care about children. He cares about control.””

I looked at the documents.

For the first time, I saw something I had missed.

The test wasn’t changed to hide the truth.

It was changed to protect Maya from someone who wanted to weaponize it.

But that still left one question.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Ethan looked away.

“Because after I changed it, I realized something.””

“What?””

“You didn’t need a DNA result to be her father.””

The words hurt.

Because they were true.

But truth without trust still destroys people.

I left his house with the file.

When I returned home, Maya was waiting.

She looked at my face.

“Did you find out?””

I nodded.

“Yeah.””

“Was he lying?””

I sat beside her.

“No.””

She looked surprised.

“Then why do you look angry?””

I looked toward the hallway.

Because there was still one person whose secrets were not explained.

“Because I’m starting to understand that everyone was trying to protect you.””

Maya whispered:

“Except nobody asked if I needed protecting.””

Before I could answer, my phone rang.

The number was unknown.

I answered.

A man’s voice spoke.

“Michael?””

“Yes?””

“This is Daniel.””

My body went still.

“I think you deserve to know what Nicole did before she met you.””

I gripped the phone.

“What are you talking about?””

A pause.

Then his voice lowered.

“Your wife didn’t leave me because she was afraid.””

May you like

The line went quiet.

“She left because she took something from me.””
