Chapter 11: Daniel’s Version of the Story
I stayed on the phone.
I don’t know why.
Every instinct told me to hang up.
But I had spent years living with half-truths.
I needed to hear everything.
“What did Nicole take from you?””
Daniel laughed softly.
Not happily.
Bitterly.
“My son.””
I looked toward the stairs.
At the room where Jordan slept.
“What does that mean?””
“It means Nicole stole my chance to be a father.””
My grip tightened.
“You abandoned her.””
“No.””
His answer was immediate.
“I made mistakes. I was young. Angry. Stupid.””
“That’s not an excuse.””
“I know.””
For a moment, his honesty surprised me.
Then I remembered.
People who manipulate don’t always lie.
Sometimes they mix truth with lies.
“Why are you calling me?””
“Because you deserve the whole story.””
“I’ve heard enough stories.””
“From people protecting Nicole.””
The words bothered me.
Because they were true.
Everyone had a version.
Everyone had a reason.
“Meet me.””
I almost refused.
But I heard myself say:
“Where?””
Two hours later, I sat across from Daniel in a small restaurant.
The man looked nothing like the monster I imagined.
That worried me.
Because villains are easier when they look like villains.
Daniel looked like a tired father.
“I know you hate me.””
“I don’t know you.””
He nodded.
“That’s fair.””
“Tell me the truth.””
He folded his hands.
“When I met Nicole, she was seventeen.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
He looked at me.
“She was scared.””
“Of you?””
His face changed.
“No.””
He looked down.
“Of becoming like her own parents.””
I said nothing.
“She wanted to give Lucas a good life.””
My chest tightened.
“She told me about Lucas.””
Daniel nodded.
“She loved him.””
“Then what happened?””
“I got scared.””
I raised an eyebrow.
“Scared?””
“I was young. I had no money. No idea how to be a father.””
He looked ashamed.
“I ran.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I left her alone.””
“So you admit it.””
“Yes.””
He looked directly at me.
“I failed her.””
I waited.
“Then why blame her?””
“Because when I came back, she wouldn’t let me see my son.””
“Lucas was gone.””
His expression collapsed.
“I know.””
Silence.
Then he continued.
“But after Lucas died, Nicole changed.””
“How?””
“She decided no one would ever take another child away from her.””
I understood.
Jordan.
Maya.
Everyone.
“She kept Maya from me too.””
I frowned.
“Because Maya was yours?””
Daniel nodded.
“But she wasn’t trying to hurt her.””
I studied him.
“You’re defending her?””
“No.””
He looked away.
“I’m saying she was afraid.””
The conversation became something I didn’t expect.
Not an accusation.
A confession.
“So why now?””
Daniel pulled out a photograph.
It showed Maya.
Standing outside school.
Watching him.
“She found me.””
My heart stopped.
“Maya?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel slid the photo across the table.
“Because she wanted answers.””
I stared at the picture.
“When?””
“Months ago.””
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
Daniel gave me a sad smile.
“Because everyone in your family has been making decisions for Maya.””
The words hit hard.
“She’s fifteen.””
“I know.””
“She’s a child.””
“Yes.””
He leaned closer.
“But she’s been carrying adult secrets for years.””
I looked away.
Because I knew he was right.
Then Daniel said something that changed everything.
“There’s one more thing Nicole never told you.””
I looked back.
“What?””
He reached into his pocket.
Pulled out a folded document.
“She didn’t only hide the truth about Maya.””
My stomach tightened.
“What else?””
May you like
Daniel placed the paper on the table.
“She hid the reason she married you.””
