Chapter 9: The Witness

Sarah placed the photograph on the table.

The woman’s face stared back at her.

A stranger.

But somehow connected to everything.

“Her name?”” Sarah asked.

Daniel swallowed.

“Victoria Hale.””

Rachel, who had stayed behind to help organize the documents, looked up immediately.

“You know her?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Rachel picked up the photograph.

“But I do.””

Sarah turned.

“What?””

Rachel studied the picture.

“She’s the attorney who handled several high-profile custody cases.””

“And?””

Rachel looked at Sarah.

“And she has a reputation for building cases before anyone knows they’re involved.””

A chill ran through Sarah.

“So this started before I came home.””

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel sat down.

“My father planned this.””

Sarah looked at him.

“And your mother helped.””

Daniel didn’t argue.

That was the hardest part.

The truth was finally arriving.

But it came after the damage was already done.

Sarah picked up the folder.

“We need to find out everything.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Sarah.””

She stopped.

“What?””

“I’m sorry.””

The words were simple.

Almost too simple.

Sarah looked at him.

“I believe you’re sorry.””

Daniel’s expression softened.

“But that doesn’t fix what happened.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

“And it doesn’t mean I trust you.””

His face fell.

“I know.””

For the first time in days, Sarah believed him.

Not because he deserved forgiveness.

Because he finally stopped trying to defend himself.

That night, Sarah sat beside Emma’s bed.

Her daughter was asleep.

The stuffed rabbit rested under her arm.

The same way it always had.

Sarah watched her breathing.

She thought about all the moments she almost missed.

All the birthdays.

All the bedtime stories.

All the tiny memories someone tried to turn into evidence.

Her phone vibrated.

A message.

From Victoria Hale.

Sarah froze.

She had never given Victoria her number.

The message contained only one sentence.

*You should ask Daniel what happened the night Emma was born.*

Sarah stared at the screen.

Her first instinct was anger.

Then confusion.

Because the night Emma was born had always been sacred.

A hospital room.

A crying baby.

Daniel holding her hand.

At least, that was what she remembered.

Sarah walked into the living room.

Daniel was awake.

“Did you know Victoria Hale?””

Daniel looked surprised.

“No.””

“Did she know you?””

“No.””

Sarah held up her phone.

“She sent me a message.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“What did she say?””

Sarah watched him carefully.

“She asked me about the night Emma was born.””

Daniel went completely still.

Not confused.

Not angry.

Afraid.

Sarah noticed immediately.

“Daniel.””

He looked away.

“Sarah…”

“What happened that night?””

He didn’t answer.

The silence was unbearable.

“Daniel.””

Finally, he whispered:

“There’s something I never told you.””

Sarah’s heart sank.

“What?””

Daniel rubbed his eyes.

“The hospital records…”

“What about them?””

He looked at her.

“They were changed.””

Sarah stared.

“Changed by who?””

Daniel’s voice became barely audible.

“My father.””

Sarah felt cold.

“Why would your father change hospital records?””

Daniel looked toward Emma’s bedroom.

Then back at Sarah.

“Because Emma’s birth certificate wasn’t supposed to have my name on it.””

Sarah couldn’t breathe.

“What are you saying?””

Daniel looked broken.

“I’m saying…”

He stopped.

May you like

Then whispered:

“Emma may not be my biological daughter.””
