Chapter 13: The Child Who Was Never Mentioned

Sarah stared at the file.

The words refused to make sense.

*Second child: living.*

Her fingers trembled.

“No.””

The nurse looked uncomfortable.

“I’m sorry.””

Sarah looked up.

“Sorry for what?””

The nurse lowered her eyes.

“For the fact that no one told you.””

The room became silent.

Daniel slowly stood.

“Sarah…”

She turned toward him.

“Did you know?””

His face changed immediately.

“No.””

“Did you know there was another child?””

“No.””

She searched his expression.

For once, there was no hesitation.

No hiding.

Just shock.

Rachel stepped closer.

“Can we see the rest of the file?””

The nurse nodded.

She opened it carefully.

“These records were sealed after a legal request.””

“From who?”” Sarah asked.

The nurse hesitated.

“Thomas Bennett.””

Sarah felt anger rise.

Again.

Everything led back to him.

“He sealed my medical records?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

The nurse looked at the paperwork.

“Because he claimed it was for the protection of the children.””

Sarah almost laughed.

Protection.

Everyone used that word.

Protection when they lied.

Protection when they controlled.

Protection when they stole choices from her.

She turned the page.

The first document was from the night Emma was born.

A nurse’s handwritten note.

*Mother was informed she delivered one healthy infant.*

Sarah stopped.

“One?””

The nurse nodded.

“Yes.””

Sarah looked confused.

“But this says second child.””

The nurse continued.

“The second record was created after a review.””

“Review by who?””

The nurse looked at Rachel.

“Victoria Hale.””

Rachel froze.

“Why would she review my records?””

Nobody answered.

Sarah looked at Rachel.

“You knew her.””

Rachel shook her head.

“Not personally.””

“But your family is connected.””

“Yes.””

Sarah looked back at the file.

Another page.

A transfer document.

A baby moved from one hospital department to another.

Then another signature.

Thomas Bennett.

Daniel whispered:

“He took the baby.””

Sarah looked at him.

“Your father took my child.””

Daniel looked devastated.

“I’m sorry.””

Sarah’s eyes filled.

But she shook her head.

“I don’t need apologies.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I need answers.””

The nurse stepped back.

“I should let you read.””

After she left, the room became painfully quiet.

Sarah kept reading.

The second child had survived.

The child had been transferred.

The records after that were missing.

Twenty-seven years of missing information.

Then she saw something.

A name.

Not Emma.

Not Elena.

Another name.

A name written in the corner.

*Maya Hale.*

Sarah looked up.

“Rachel.””

Rachel moved closer.

Her face changed when she saw it.

“That’s impossible.””

“What?””

Rachel touched the paper.

“My aunt.””

Sarah froze.

“Your aunt?””

Rachel nodded slowly.

“She disappeared when she was a baby.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Your family thought she disappeared?””

Rachel’s eyes filled.

“My grandmother spent her whole life looking for her.””

Sarah looked at the document.

A terrifying thought formed.

“What are you saying?””

Rachel whispered:

“My missing aunt might be the other child.””

Nobody spoke.

The possibility was too enormous.

Sarah looked at Daniel.

“If this is true…”

Daniel finished the sentence.

“Then Emma wasn’t the baby taken.””

Sarah’s heart stopped.

“What?””

Rachel looked at the file again.

“The missing child may not have replaced Emma.””

She pointed.

“The records show two separate transfers.””

Sarah stared.

Two transfers.

Two children.

Two secrets.

Thomas hadn’t simply hidden a child.

He had hidden an entire story.

Then Sarah’s phone vibrated.

A message.

From Thomas.

*You found the wrong file.*

Sarah stared.

Another message appeared.

*The second child was never the secret.*

Her breath caught.

May you like

A third message.

*The secret is who raised her.*
