Chapter 11: The Child They Tried to Hide

Sarah dropped the phone.

Daniel caught it before it hit the floor.

But he couldn’t catch the look on her face.

The fear.

The confusion.

The impossible thought forming in her mind.

“No.””

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“No.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Sarah.””

“Don’t.””

She looked at him.

“Don’t say anything.””

Rachel remained silent.

Even she seemed shocked.

Sarah walked toward the window.

The world outside looked normal.

Cars passing.

Lights glowing.

People living ordinary lives.

But her entire reality had changed.

“My baby?””

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“I don’t know what Victoria meant.””

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

“Then why did you look scared?””

Daniel froze.

Because she was right.

He had looked scared.

Not surprised.

Scared.

Sarah turned.

“You knew there was something.””

Daniel sat down.

“When Emma was born, my father told me not to ask questions.””

“About my daughter?””

“Yes.””

“Why would you listen?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Because he threatened me.””

The answer stopped her.

“What?””

“He said if I caused problems, he would make sure I lost everything.””

Sarah stared.

“And you believed him?””

“I was young.””

“You were her father.””

Daniel nodded.

“I know.””

Rachel quietly spoke.

“There’s something you both need to see.””

She opened her laptop.

A scanned hospital document appeared.

“Where did you get that?””

Rachel looked uncomfortable.

“Victoria sent it.””

Sarah looked at her.

“She’s helping us?””

“I don’t know.””

“That’s not comforting.””

Rachel nodded.

“I know.””

The document showed two names.

Two babies.

Two birth records.

Sarah leaned closer.

Then her face changed.

“No.””

Daniel looked.

“What?””

Sarah pointed.

“This date.””

Daniel looked at the screen.

The date was the same.

Same hospital.

Same night.

Two births.

Rachel continued.

“There was another baby born that night.””

Sarah’s hands trembled.

“And?””

“And that record disappeared.””

Daniel looked horrified.

“Disappeared?””

Rachel nodded.

“Someone removed it.””

Sarah looked at Emma’s bedroom.

Her heart was racing.

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face went pale.

“It’s my father.””

Sarah immediately said:

“Answer it.””

Daniel hesitated.

“Sarah…”

“Answer it.””

He pressed the speaker.

For a moment, there was only silence.

Then an older man’s voice spoke.

“Daniel.””

Daniel froze.

“Dad.””

Sarah listened.

She had never heard Thomas Bennett’s voice before.

“You should have left this alone.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“You know about the records.””

A quiet laugh came through the phone.

“I know about everything.””

Sarah stepped closer.

“Who is this?””

The voice paused.

Then answered.

“So this is Sarah.””

She felt cold.

Thomas continued.

“You’ve caused a lot of problems.””

Sarah’s anger replaced her fear.

“You took my child.””

“No.””

The voice was calm.

“I protected my family.””

“By destroying mine?””

“You don’t understand what happened.””

“Then explain.””

Another pause.

Then Thomas said:

“Emma was never supposed to be raised by you.””

Daniel looked sick.

“Why?””

Thomas ignored him.

“Because the truth about Emma would destroy more than a marriage.””

Sarah’s heart pounded.

“What truth?””

Thomas laughed softly.

“You really don’t know.””

The call ended.

Daniel immediately called back.

No answer.

Rachel looked at the screen.

“He knew we were investigating.””

Sarah looked at her.

“How?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Sarah noticed something.

The front door.

It wasn’t locked.

A cold breeze moved through the hallway.

Someone had entered the house.

Daniel stood.

“Who’s there?””

No response.

Sarah grabbed Emma’s bedroom door handle.

Then stopped.

A piece of paper was lying outside the room.

She picked it up.

One sentence.

Written in black ink.

*The child you raised is not the child you lost.*

Sarah’s breathing stopped.

Because underneath the sentence was a name.

May you like

A name she had never seen before.

Emma’s original birth name.
