Chapter 5: The Hidden Plan
The next morning, Sarah woke up on the couch.
She had refused to sleep in the bedroom.
Not because she hated Daniel.
Because she no longer knew who he was.
Emma was curled beside her, one small hand resting on Sarah’s arm.
For a few seconds, everything felt normal.
The sunlight came through the curtains.
The house was quiet.
Emma’s rabbit sat between them.
Then Sarah remembered.
The folder.
The report.
The accusation.
Her stomach tightened.
She carefully moved so she wouldn’t wake Emma.
In the kitchen, Daniel was already there.
He looked exhausted.
Like he hadn’t slept either.
“I made coffee.””
Sarah ignored the cup.
“Where is the rest of the paperwork?””
Daniel looked down.
“I don’t know.””
“You signed it.””
“Yes.””
“Then you know.””
He stayed silent.
Sarah placed the folder on the counter.
“I want the truth.””
Daniel leaned against the cabinet.
“I thought you were leaving.””
Sarah stared.
“Why?””
“Because you said you were unhappy.””
“I said I was tired.””
“You said you couldn’t live like that anymore.””
Sarah shook her head.
“I said I couldn’t live like that alone.””
Daniel looked away.
The guilt on his face was clear.
But Sarah needed more than guilt.
She needed answers.
“Who convinced you?””
He didn’t speak.
“Daniel.””
“My mother.””
The honesty surprised her.
Sarah closed her eyes.
“What did she say?””
Daniel sat down.
“She said you were planning something.””
“Something?””
“She said you had been saving money.””
Sarah frowned.
“I was saving money for Emma’s college.””
“I know that now.””
“She said I was preparing to leave with Emma.””
“And you believed her.””
Daniel’s silence was painful.
Sarah walked to the window.
Outside, their neighbor’s children were playing in the yard.
A normal morning.
A normal family.
Everything looked exactly the same.
But nothing was.
“Why didn’t you ask me?””
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“Because I was afraid.””
Sarah turned.
“Afraid of what?””
“Losing Emma.””
She stared at him.
“You were so afraid of losing her that you tried to take her away from me.””
Daniel had no response.
A knock came at the door.
Both of them froze.
Sarah knew immediately.
Family services.
Daniel opened it.
A woman in her forties stood outside holding a folder.
“Sarah Bennett?””
“Yes.””
“I’m Lauren Hayes.””
Dr. Hayes looked between Sarah and Daniel.
“I’m here for the home assessment.””
The next hour felt like an examination of Sarah’s entire life.
The toys.
The kitchen.
Emma’s room.
The refrigerator filled with children’s snacks.
The drawings on the walls.
Everything she had built.
Dr. Hayes watched quietly.
Then she sat across from Sarah.
“I reviewed the report.””
Sarah’s hands tightened.
“And?””
“I have questions.””
“About me?””
“About everyone.””
That answer surprised Sarah.
Dr. Hayes opened her folder.
“The report claims you frequently disappear without explanation.””
Sarah looked at Daniel.
“I travel for work.””
“How often?””
“Once every few months.””
“Who cares for Emma?””
“Daniel.””
Dr. Hayes nodded.
“Does he?””
The question hung in the air.
Sarah looked confused.
“What do you mean?””
Dr. Hayes glanced at her notes.
“Because according to his statement, he claims he is the primary caregiver.””
Sarah looked at Daniel.
He went pale.
“That’s not true.””
Daniel quickly stood.
“I meant emotionally.””
Dr. Hayes looked at him.
“Your report specifically says you handle most daily responsibilities.””
Sarah laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because she finally understood.
Daniel hadn’t just believed a lie.
He had helped create one.
Dr. Hayes closed the folder.
“I need to ask one more question.””
Sarah nodded.
“What?””
Dr. Hayes looked at Emma’s bedroom.
“Who placed that bracelet on your daughter?””
Sarah froze.
“How did you know about the bracelet?””
Dr. Hayes hesitated.
“Because I saw a picture attached to the original complaint.””
Sarah’s face changed.
“A picture?””
“Yes.””
“Who took it?””
Dr. Hayes looked at the paper.
Then answered.
“Your mother-in-law.””
Sarah felt cold.
A picture.
A report.
A custody request.
It was planned.
Not by accident.
Dr. Hayes stood.
“I’ll need to investigate further.””
After she left, Sarah turned toward Daniel.
“You took pictures of our daughter.””
Daniel looked confused.
“What?””
“The complaint.””
“I didn’t attach pictures.””
Sarah’s heart stopped.
“Then who did?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because both of them already knew.
And then Sarah’s phone received a message.
Unknown number.
