Chapter 8: The Man Who Never Left
The name sat on the page like a ghost.
Thomas Bennett.
Daniel’s father.
A man Sarah had only heard about in stories.
A man who supposedly left years ago.
A man Daniel rarely mentioned.
Sarah looked at him.
“Your father is involved?””
Daniel stared at the document.
“I haven’t seen him in fifteen years.””
Rachel folded her arms.
“That doesn’t mean he hasn’t been watching.””
Daniel looked at her.
“How do you know?””
Rachel hesitated.
Sarah noticed.
“Rachel.””
The woman took a breath.
“Because I met him.””
Daniel went still.
“When?””
“Three months ago.””
Sarah looked between them.
“And you didn’t tell me?””
Rachel looked at Daniel.
“I told you I had information.””
“You told me you were helping.””
“I was.””
Sarah shook her head.
“You were all helping each other.””
Rachel didn’t argue.
That was the most honest thing she had done.
Daniel picked up the paper.
“What does my father want?””
No one answered immediately.
Then Olivia spoke.
“He wants what belongs to this family.””
Sarah turned.
“Family?””
Her voice was cold.
“He disappeared.””
Olivia’s expression changed.
“He made mistakes.””
“He abandoned his son.””
Daniel looked away.
Sarah saw the pain in his face.
This wasn’t just about custody.
This was about old wounds.
Old manipulation.
A family that had been broken long before Sarah entered it.
Rachel opened another page.
“There’s more.””
Sarah looked.
A financial statement.
A property record.
A list of assets.
At the bottom was a note.
*Once custody is secured, transfer process begins.*
Daniel’s face went pale.
“He wanted the house.””
“And the investments,” Rachel said.
Sarah looked at Olivia.
“You knew.””
Olivia didn’t deny it.
“I knew he was coming back.””
Daniel stepped toward his mother.
“You knew my father was alive?””
The room became silent.
Sarah watched Olivia’s face.
That was the first time she saw something she never expected.
Fear.
Not guilt.
Fear.
“How long?”” Daniel asked.
Olivia looked away.
“Daniel…”
“How long did you know?””
“Years.””
Daniel laughed once.
A broken sound.
“Years?””
She whispered.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“No.””
His voice rose.
“You were controlling me.””
Olivia’s expression hardened.
“I was your mother.””
“And you lied to me.””
Sarah watched the argument.
For the first time, Daniel wasn’t defending his mother.
He was seeing her.
Really seeing her.
Emma suddenly coughed from the couch.
Everyone turned.
Sarah immediately went to her.
“Are you okay?””
Emma nodded.
“I’m tired.””
Sarah picked her up.
The simple movement reminded everyone what this was about.
Not money.
Not documents.
Not revenge.
A little girl caught in the middle.
Rachel looked at Emma.
“I’m sorry.””
Sarah looked at her.
“You should be.””
Rachel accepted that.
“I know.””
Daniel approached slowly.
“Sarah.””
She didn’t look at him.
“I need time.””
“I know.””
“No. You don’t.””
She adjusted Emma in her arms.
“You keep saying you were afraid of losing her.””
Daniel’s eyes lowered.
“But you never stopped to think about what you were doing to her.””
That hurt him.
Because he knew it was true.
The next morning, Sarah met with Dr. Hayes again.
This time, she brought the documents.
Dr. Hayes read quietly.
Then looked up.
“This changes the situation.””
Sarah nodded.
“I thought it would.””
“There are signs of coordinated actions.””
Sarah looked down.
“Can this help me?””
Dr. Hayes didn’t promise.
But she answered honestly.
“It helps establish context.””
Sarah took a breath.
Then asked the question she had been avoiding.
“What happens now?””
Dr. Hayes closed the folder.
“Now we investigate who created this plan.””
Sarah returned home that evening.
The house felt different.
Like it belonged to strangers.
Daniel was sitting alone in the living room.
No Olivia.
No Rachel.
Just him.
“I need to tell you something,” he said.
Sarah stopped.
“What?””
Daniel looked terrified.
“I found something on my father.””
Sarah waited.
“He wasn’t just planning to take the house.””
“What else?””
Daniel handed her an old photograph.
A picture of Thomas Bennett standing beside a woman.
Sarah looked at the woman.
Then froze.
Because she recognized her.
She had seen that face before.
On a document.
On the custody papers.
A witness signature.
Sarah whispered:
“Who is she?””
Daniel looked at the photograph.
And answered:
“That’s my father’s lawyer.””
Sarah stared.
“Your father’s lawyer?””
May you like
Daniel nodded slowly.
“And she’s been working with my mother for months.””
