Chapter 7: The Trap She Built

I called Rachel before I even thought about anything else.

She answered on the first ring.

“Are you okay?””

Her voice was tense.

I swallowed.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

“At home.””

“Lock your doors.””

Silence.

Then:

“What happened?””

I stared at the photo on my phone.

Rachel standing outside her apartment.

Someone had been watching her.

Someone close enough to take that picture.

“Evelyn knows where you are.””

Rachel went quiet.

“She sent you something?””

“Yes.””

“What?””

I didn’t want to say it.

Because saying it out loud would make it real.

“She sent a picture of you.””

Rachel exhaled slowly.

“She always does that.””

I froze.

“What do you mean?””

“She likes reminding people she can reach them.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“You knew she was still like this?””

Rachel laughed softly, but there was no humor in it.

“I knew she never changed.””

An hour later, Rachel arrived at my temporary apartment.

She looked exhausted.

Emma ran toward her immediately.

“Aunt Rachel!””

Rachel knelt down and hugged her.

For a moment, she looked like she was going to cry.

Then she whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

Emma pulled back.

“For what?””

Rachel looked at her.

“For not protecting you sooner.””

Emma didn’t understand.

She just hugged her again.

And somehow, that hurt even more.

Because children shouldn’t have to comfort adults.

After Emma went to sleep, Rachel and I sat at the kitchen table.

The recording played again.

Evelyn’s voice filled the room.

Cold.

Certain.

Like she had never believed she could be wrong.

“She’s been doing this forever,” Rachel said.

I looked at her.

“How many people?””

Rachel stared at the floor.

“I don’t know.””

“That notebook had names.””

“I know.””

“Who were they?””

Rachel hesitated.

“Neighbors. Family friends. Even one of Daniel’s teachers.””

My stomach tightened.

“She hurt all those people?””

“Not always physically.””

Rachel looked at me.

“Sometimes she just made them believe they were the problem.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Because that was exactly what she was doing.

She wasn’t trying to prove Emma wasn’t hurt.

She was trying to convince everyone that I was the reason it happened.

The next morning, my lawyer called.

“She filed for emergency custody.””

My heart dropped.

“What?””

“She claims you are emotionally manipulating Emma.””

I closed my eyes.

“She’s using the exact thing she did to Rachel.””

“Yes.””

Melissa’s voice was calm.

“But there’s something important.””

“What?””

“She made a mistake.””

I sat up.

“What mistake?””

“She submitted her own statement.””

“And?””

“She described details that were never released publicly.””

I frowned.

“What details?””

Melissa paused.

“About the closet.””

The room went silent.

“How would she know?””

“That’s what we need to find out.””

For the first time in days, I felt something besides fear.

A small piece of hope.

Evelyn had always been careful.

But this time, she had rushed.

She had been angry.

And angry people made mistakes.

That afternoon, Daniel came to see me.

I almost didn’t let him in.

But Emma asked if Daddy was there.

And I couldn’t punish her for his mistakes.

He stood in the doorway looking broken.

“I brought something.””

I didn’t move.

“What?””

He handed me a small flash drive.

“My mother’s computer.””

I stared at it.

“How did you get this?””

“I took it before I left.””

My eyes narrowed.

“You stole from her?””

“I copied files.””

He looked away.

“I needed proof.””

I held the drive.

“What’s on it?””

“I don’t know everything.””

That answer bothered me.

“You copied something without looking?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His voice dropped.

“Because I was scared that if I saw everything, I’d have to admit how long I let this happen.””

I didn’t respond.

Because there was nothing I could say.

That night, Melissa helped us review the files.

Most were ordinary.

Family photos.

Emails.

Documents.

Then we found a hidden folder.

No name.

Just a date.

The day Emma was born.

I opened it.

Inside were dozens of files.

My breathing stopped.

There were pictures.

Not inappropriate.

Not illegal.

But disturbing.

Pictures of Emma throughout the years.

Taken without my knowledge.

Playing outside.

Eating breakfast.

Sleeping on the couch.

“She was watching her,” I whispered.

Melissa looked serious.

“This is evidence of a pattern.””

Then we found the final file.

A video.

The date was two weeks before the closet incident.

I pressed play.

The screen showed Evelyn sitting in her office.

Talking to someone off camera.

Her voice was calm.

“She needs to learn before she becomes just like her mother.””

My blood ran cold.

Then the person behind the camera spoke.

And I recognized the voice immediately.

Daniel.

My husband.

The video continued.

“She trusts you,” Evelyn said.

Daniel replied quietly:

“I don’t want to do this.””

Evelyn smiled.

“You will.””

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

Because now we knew.

Daniel hadn’t just failed to protect Emma.

He had been part of the plan.

And the worst part?

May you like

I still didn’t know whether he was trying to stop it...

or whether he was only sorry because he got caught.
