Chapter 11: The Final Move
The letter changed everything.
Melissa immediately submitted it as evidence.
But even with the proof, I knew Evelyn wasn’t finished.
People like her didn’t surrender.
They changed strategies.
Two days later, my phone rang.
It was Emma’s school.
My heart immediately dropped.
“Hello?””
The secretary sounded nervous.
“Are you Emma’s mother?””
“Yes.””
“There’s a situation.””
I stood up.
“What happened?””
“Your daughter was picked up by someone claiming to be authorized.””
The room spun.
“What?””
“We stopped her before she left the building.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“Who was it?””
A pause.
Then:
“Your mother-in-law.””
I grabbed my keys.
By the time I reached the school, Emma was sitting in the office with her teacher.
The moment she saw me, she ran into my arms.
“Mommy!””
I held her tightly.
“I’m here.””
The principal looked uncomfortable.
“Mrs. Evelyn said she had permission.””
I turned.
“She didn’t.””
The principal nodded.
“We realized something was wrong when Emma became upset.””
I looked down at my daughter.
Her hands were shaking.
“She told us she wasn’t supposed to go with Grandma.””
I closed my eyes.
Because Emma knew.
She knew before anyone else.
Evelyn had spent months trying to convince her she was wrong.
But Emma still knew.
Outside the office, Evelyn was waiting.
Of course she was.
She stood calmly near the entrance.
“You’re overreacting.””
I stared at her.
“You tried to take my daughter from school.””
“I came to pick up my granddaughter.””
“You were not authorized.””
She smiled.
“See? This is what I mean.””
“What?””
“You make everything sound dangerous.””
I stepped closer.
“No. You make dangerous things sound normal.””
Her expression hardened.
“You have turned my family against me.””
I almost couldn’t believe it.
“You did that yourself.””
She lowered her voice.
“You really think you won?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I had learned something.
Arguing with Evelyn was useless.
She didn’t listen.
She waited.
Waited for a chance to twist your words.
So I simply said:
“Stay away from Emma.””
For once, she had no immediate response.
Then she smiled.
“Fine.””
The calmness bothered me.
Too much.
“Fine?””
“Yes.””
She stepped back.
“Let’s see how long you can keep everyone believing you.””
That night, I checked every lock twice.
Then I sat beside Emma until she fell asleep.
I thought the danger was Evelyn.
I was wrong.
The next morning, Melissa called.
“You need to come in.””
Her voice was serious.
“What happened?””
“We received something from Evelyn’s lawyer.””
I arrived thirty minutes later.
Melissa placed a folder on the table.
“What is it?””
“She’s withdrawing her custody request.””
I frowned.
“That’s good.””
“No.””
The way she said it made my stomach tighten.
“Why not?””
Melissa opened the folder.
“Because she filed something else.””
I read the first page.
My blood ran cold.
A civil claim.
Against me.
For defamation.
“She’s suing me?””
“Yes.””
“For telling the truth?””
“She claims you destroyed her reputation.””
I stared at the paperwork.
This was exactly what Rachel warned me about.
Evelyn didn’t need to prove she was innocent.
She only needed to make the fight exhausting.
“She wants me to give up.””
Melissa nodded.
“Exactly.””
I looked out the window.
“No.””
Melissa watched me.
“No?””
I shook my head.
“She picked the wrong person.””
That afternoon, I received another message.
Not from Evelyn.
From an unknown number.
One sentence.
“Your husband still hasn’t told you the whole story.””
I looked at Daniel.
He was sitting across the room.
My heart sank.
May you like
Because after everything...
there was still another secret.
